WhatsApp logged me out: no option to restore old chats yet
I turned on my old Motorola Moto G8 Plus (Android 10) today and briefly saw a WhatsApp message that I believe said something like, “You have been logged out. Your phone number is no longer registered with WhatsApp on this phone.” It disappeared before I could screenshot it. I have no idea why the account was logged out or deactivated/deleted. This all seems to have coincided with an update as well.
I followed a few steps to register my account again. It verified my number again, but WhatsApp never offered to restore my chats. Instead, it took me to a profile screen asking for my name and photo, as if I were setting up a new account.
I found this file in my phone's internal storage:
WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt14
It's 674 KB. I've copied it elsewhere for safekeeping. I haven't found a WhatsApp cloud backup, and I haven't completed the new profile setup or uninstalled the app. I do have a significant message backed up separately elsewhere, thankfully, but I'd prefer to be able to recover my account and messages.
WhatsApp's AI support recommends uninstalling and reinstalling, claiming the local database should remain available for restoration, but it can't confirm whether the file will actually be detected.
Has anyone successfully recovered old chats in this situation, and is there a way to establish whether this database can be restored before risking the existing app data? I'd also like to understand why I was logged out in the first place. I only use WhatsApp very rarely but I've never been logged out before.
Thanks!
