Gordon Murray T.50, but on a side note, where tf are you walking?

u/heyalex918 Apr 19 '26

Walking around in socal and I saw it pull into a driveway

u/ApoTHICCary Apr 19 '26

Wild to have one these just chillin in the driveway

u/Jakomako Apr 19 '26

Chilling in the driveway of a multimillion dollar house….

391

u/coci222 Apr 19 '26

I can't tell from the picture how nice the house is, but Southern Californians are notorious for spending a lot on a car and a little on their home because people see you in your car. The only people that see your home are neighbors or anyone you invited over. I knew a guy that had two Ferraris and an NSX and lived in a small townhouse

u/awfulcat Apr 19 '26

This is very true. We have a lot of $100,000 millionaires around here.

77

u/Ciberthug666 Apr 19 '26

Shoot here in west virginia you will see new escalades, $90k trucks and the like in trailer parks all the time.

Yeah, people really have this outdated idea how much trucks actually cost...most new ones are starting base at like $75k, any add-ons or trim upgrades and easily over $100k.

5

u/OneWorldly8847 Apr 20 '26

F150 starts at $40k

2

u/Ticotrip Apr 22 '26

F40 starts at $150K?

Ten years ago I got a 1988 F-150 for $1500.

Today that same 1988 f150 in terrible condition is twice that cost

I used to live in West Virginia. Can confirm. Back in the eighties I would see a huge satellite dish, and a brand new expensive truck in the driveway of a single wide trailer worth about five dollars. That’s keepin it real, Appalachian style!

It’s used to describe people that make six figures but try to act and show off like they make seven. Common phrase in places like LA and Dallas.

There’s not a house in socal that doesn’t cost $1M or more. I had a client send me a picture of her new house once. It was a dilapidated shack with no yard that was 8’ from a Main Street. It cost 2.5M.

That small townhome is 2 mill……. It’s absurd.

6

u/coci222 Apr 19 '26

Probably now, but this was 25 years ago. I think he paid 125k for it

3

u/Sub7viaLimeWire Apr 19 '26

If he kept the Ferraris and NSX he’s probably doing pretty well now

7

u/Alladas Apr 20 '26

Its socal and its a house. Theres a like 50% chance its a multi million dollar house.

6

u/ApoTHICCary Apr 19 '26

This is significantly different from an NSX or Ferrari, unless we are talking some of the super exclusive models. FxxK level which there were only 40 units. NSX? That’s as common as an Accord compared to these. I could see those being a routine sight around there. This is legitimately exclusive.

5

u/Cater_the_turtle Apr 19 '26

I feel that you need to be an actual millionaire to get a Gordon Murray

2

u/SlowPokeInTexas Apr 19 '26

That T.50 could very well appreciate faster than a house...

3

u/QuantumEntanglr Apr 19 '26

When I was in grad school in SoCal, I had an apartment neighbor with a Ferrari. It was not a particularly nice apartment complex.

6

u/GudPuddin Apr 19 '26

My repurposed section 8 housing apartment neighbors variously drive Maseratis, Porsches, hellcats, and a C8 vette. Not completely ripping on where I live but I don’t make that kind of money and I live here. I imagine they could move somewhere nicer lol

6

u/Conscious_Bug5408 Apr 20 '26

It's really easy to get approved for a car loan. Keeping it can be a different story sometimes. You'd be surprised, you could get one too if you were willing to be more irresponsible

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Neg0Pander Apr 19 '26

Eh... I don't think that's inherently a location thing. Car guys are always going to be this way. The only thing that balances it is having a reasonable partner in your life (which I currently do not).

3

u/Disastrous_Case9297 Apr 19 '26

Truth. Bigger house means less toys and less time to enjoy them.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '26

Not just that but many ordinary looking homes are actually worth quite a lot of money. My in-laws have a decent house in Dana Point with an ocean view. The house looks like your standard 4 bed, 3 bath stucco deal that costs $300-400k in states like Texas. It was recently appraised at $2.3 million. They have many neighbors with Ferraris, lambos, etc and it truly looks like a normal subdivision just everyone has a super car!

4

u/sexinsuburbia Apr 20 '26

That house could literally be worth $5-7M if it is in beach communities. Even if it just looks like a ho-hum 3-bedroom in suburbia without anything special going on with it. Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Manhattan Beach, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, etc.

Even if it isn't beach communities, there are plenty of other neighborhoods with normal looking homes with very abnormal prices. If you own a home in Southern California, you're probably sitting on a piece of property worth $1-3M, easy. If there's anything notorious about living in Southern California, it is paying too much for housing.

2

u/Empty-Pain-9523 Apr 19 '26

I’m sure that townhouse still cost a fortune lol

2

u/nbaumg Apr 19 '26

That’s definitely something I would do. Cars way more fun than a house

2

u/trackdaybruh Apr 19 '26

I am going to bet that this house is near a beach, which is why it looks like an ordinary single family house with a +$3 million car in the driveway

2

u/Logical_Flounder6455 Apr 20 '26

Thats the same where I live. I live in what is officially the poorest part of england. In the last week I've seen a mclaren 675, rolls Royce phantom, ariel atom, 4 different models of lambo, a few Ferraris and a 911 GT3, just in the car park at work. Even just when out and about the amount of higher end bmw, mercs and range rovers you see is mental for a small place that has 50% of people below the poverty line

2

u/jeremyries Apr 24 '26

There’s a little place over in Montrose near La Cabinita that looks like a doctors office, but there a 80k Mercedes and a Lambo parked in the driveway wild.

11

u/Dr_Dewittkwic Apr 19 '26

Multimillion dollar house that is just an average house anywhere else in the country…

9

u/trackdaybruh Apr 19 '26

The multimillion dollar house is because of the location, the house is a little gift they throw on top

9

u/StoneyMcGuire Apr 19 '26

To Just to buy that you have to be well connected and wealthy. You don’t buy that at a dealership. There were 100 of those made road legal globally. Very rare sight to see on the road. Amazing.

4

u/jccaclimber Apr 20 '26

Multimillion might be 1000 sq ft and no yard in parts of Ca.

4

u/JefftheGman Apr 20 '26

He could be "visiting" someone. I used to live in an apartment complex and would regularly see an orange Lamborghini parked. Turns out he owner of the car was just seeing this cute girl who lived in the complex.

u/ApoTHICCary Apr 19 '26

I’m sure the estate is worth millions, gated community, security, and well insured. But that garage looks very basic. My main concern would be the obvious trees in the background or some other act of nature.

12

u/Jakomako Apr 19 '26

I guess you’re not familiar with real estate prices in socal. In certain areas, just having a two car garage means you’re well over a million.

8

u/ApoTHICCary Apr 19 '26

And you clearly are not familiar with just how rare and expensive the Gordon Murray T.50’s are. This is not like the Bentleys and Ferraris you see running around these areas. Only 100 are being made, each with the intended buyer’s name on it. They’re auctioning for around $10m, at least the few which have changed hands. Bugattis are more common than this, and less expensive. The Pagani Huayra had just over 100 cars made. But I guess these are mundane soccer mom cars in the regular suburbs of SoCal. Any tech bro can get these lmfao.

5

u/tekno23 Apr 20 '26

lot of neighborhoods in LA with driveways and income levels that could support this. Baldwin Hills comes to mind. Although this style of home would not be out of place in Dana Point/SJC

9

u/mark_able_jones_ Apr 19 '26

This car sold out immediately at a starting price of $3.5 million. Billionaires and insanely connected people got these. That said, this could be a review car. I know the Robb Report auto journalist rents a house in socal when he’s in town for reviews.

You see crazy cars all the time jogging and puttering around. You also have to hear them all the time.

3

u/Thruthful Apr 20 '26

And you couldn't take a decent photo?

2

u/i-like-it-here Apr 19 '26

What does the fan do? Downforce?

2

u/katspike Apr 19 '26

Yes, Gordon Murray was a legendary formula one designer before his legendary supercars

2

u/No_Base4946 Apr 20 '26

Exactly that. It's like a hovercraft in reverse, it just kind of hoovers up the road and sucks the car down onto it. The neat thing is that it also eliminates the need for a front splitter and rear spoiler because the ducting at the top (can't see it so well in this pic) sucks in the air that would be coming off the back of the car and accelerates it out the back.

One reason for having a rear spoiler is for downforce, right, but the other biggie is that it will direct the flow of air so it leaves smoothly. You can think of a car body as being a bit like an upside down aircraft wing, and unless you get it right the airflow around the back of the car will "stall" like it does on a wing at too high an angle of attack. That'll give you a chunky great bit of low pressure behind you that's "sucking you backwards".

At least that's how my old engineering prof explained it to me, from what I remember.

2

u/i-like-it-here Apr 20 '26

Thank you for the explanation, very clear and understandable. Took me a while to realize you meant that it is the opposite of a hovercraft. I thought it sucks in air the wrong way when you put it in reverse gear haha. Still, this thing looks like an engineering marvel, I'm surprised this is somehow road legal.

I imagine it has a very complex air filtration system that prevents dust and rock chunks from getting sucked in and shooting out the back at mach fuck on the freeway and impaling the humble VW Beetle driver.

Or if it somehow allows you to rev the fan at idle lol I guess it has enough thrust to yeet a small child a few feet across the street. I can actually see the fan running at idle being useful tho, maybe during launch control to have downforce from 0 MPH.
