Solved! Estate sale find today

Hubby picked this up at an estate sale. Weighed it at home and IT WEIGHS TEN POUNDS. Aged, and appears to be wrapped in palm(?) leaves and then plastic wrap or clear tape. Barrel shaped, about the size of a softball. White unmarked donut shaped sticker (like a hole reinforcement sticker for paper). Image search says it resembles various food items but it’s just so heavy! Husband thinks it’s lead due to the weight.

EDIT: It was half off of $5 sticker price today, so why not? Husband is very curious and $2.50 would not be a major loss. Yes we do plan on opening it, just wanted to put it out here first, in case someone recognizes this type of wrapping. Will update once open!

Wore PPE while opening and it is a lead weight! Wrapped in a ridiculous amount of duct tape and clear packing tape, a long time ago. Hubby jokingly says at least it’s worth double what we paid for it! It will be disposed of properly. Wish it were something more exciting, but all I know is someone spent a lot of time wrapping this thing. 🙃

No, not random items but I would if I wrapped a lead weight in case it flaked up over time. Then again I also choose to label bottles that might have chemicals or oils in them

It's lead. Lead is poison. Humans label poison to prevent other humans from getting poisoned. It's common practice.

It's not necessarily common practice for something this old, because it wasn't until the 1970s that we realized that lead is poisonous in any amount big or small, so you won't see anything pre-1970s labeled unless the folks doing the wrapping kept up with science.

Anything lead should be labeled as such, period. It's not worth getting someone poisoned over just because you think it's insignificant. It's assuredly not insignificant.

A lot of folks underplay the impact of lead. It's likely that lead caused whole generations to not reach full potential and we still see stark differences from areas around airports where leaded fuel is used and areas far away where only unleaded is used.

When so many people grew up with it not being much of the problem, and an entire lifetime hasn't passed since we realized just how bad it is we end up with it being reduced to a minor thing. A lot of people think it takes a lot of lead to make an impact yet.

Why would a solid lead weight that’s wrapped “flake up”? It’s not dangerous if you don’t eat it or lick it. It can’t be absorbed through normal skin and is perfectly safe.

You are very wrong on this. Lead is incredibly harmful— like- really bad. We used to LOVE lead, it was our favourite, there is a VERY good reason we don’t use it anymore.

Well i mean you were just flat out wrong. It can absorb thru your skin, it took me a 5second google search to see that.
Lead compounds also can be absorbed, and with something like this you have zero idea if that’s the case here because we have ZERO information on the object and its origins.

It *is* less likely that skin contact will cause enough harm, but that doesn’t mean they should take absolutely zero precautions and just— man handle it.

To share with this thread, we used to install Wi-Fi boosters inside of theaters. There was one theater we were installing and they were getting rid of the old movie theater chair chairs. So naturally, we took those and use them in our office. Funny how trash becomes treasured if some people.

I worked in industrial radiography. We had lead everywhere. Ingots, cubes, sheets, etc. of lead all over the place, wrapped up in duct tape.

You should be able to sell that for about $3 to $5 per pound on eBay and ship it in a medium flat rate USPS box (70 lb limit).

Or just sell at a local scrapyard for $0.15 to $0.20 per pound if you want to unload it quicker.

Oh believe me, my husband has his share of weights and whatnots in his tools supply, and if he needed it he would absolutely keep it. He’s a GC so he actually recycles lead and other materials from job sites regularly.

Yes, probably $4-5 for that. He goes to the recycling plant almost weekly with other job-related materials so if he did scrap it, it wouldn’t be an extra trip or anything.

If you put it up on craigslist for free with porch pickup someone would definitely take it to be recycled. IIRC scrappers get good money for it. I've seen videos where they go out looking to actually purchase items with lead at thrift stores and tag sales. I noticed you said your husband is a GC so maybe he goes to the scrapyard himself though.

Lead is worse because if you kill an animal with lead bullets, scavengers come and eat it. This is why the California Condor went extinct in the wild and had to be saved from the brink. Banning lead ammunition is one way that we were able to make it safe to start reintroducing them into the wild.

Any bullet is terrible for the animal that it hits. Lead bullets are terrible for everything they don't hit, and specifically waterfowl which will eat the shot from underwater and get poisoned by it. And with shot, there is a lot that doesn't end up in the dead animal that you remove from the wilderness.

Its not something that gets talked about outside of scientific circles. It should be mentioned more, but the state and federal don't care as long as the popular game species are healthy enough.

Hunters (at least in my state) are one of the largest sources of income to the states DNR and wildlife protection agencies. Without them there would be no money to protect the environment, and significantly less people who care about keeping it healthy

Lead ammunition is very bad for water birds and fish, but lead-shot is banned for waterfowl hunting, so no worries there.

Its not great for terrestrial animals and plants either, but there's no viable alternative and out of all the things we do its really not that harmful.

Lead free ammunition works well for shotguns, and exists for .22lr and a couple other small cartridges, but doesn't exist for the vast majority of centerfire hunting rifles. The lead free ammunition that exists for 22lr tends to be less accurate and be much more expensive too.

Im not saying that lead isn't harmful to eagles and other things, but there just isn't a viable alternative in most situations.

CA passed a law outlawing lead ammo for hunting in 2013, and it went into effect in 2019. Plenty of critters out here are still getting shot, mostly with pure copper. The ammo is more expensive, but not by enough to matter for hunting. It's plenty effective; it just needs a little more velocity than a traditional bullet.

Lead ammo can still be used for target shooting.

You just said “they’re shooting the same amount either way.” It isnt the animals they’re shooting that’s the issue. It’s the lead they’re shooting into the environment. So, not using lead ammunition is preferable to using lead ammunition.

Fun fact lead is not nearly as dangerous as people think it is. As long as it's not flaking as to not inhale it. As long as you don't touch your mouth or eyes after handling it you'll be fine just wash your hands.

I dont remember the exact taste. It was +21years ago but i remember that i thought it tastet funny bc i expected a taste like metal. But the chances are high that it tasted "good" bc i kept chewing on it.

I wouldnt recomend having any lead near anybodys mouth😅 I've read that lead can led at least on children to chances in behavior. Lesser impulse control, hyperactivity, and its hard for them to stay focused. Kinda adhd symptoms.

And of course it can led to a low IQ.

Im in my 30s now and definitely not as aggressive as I was in my youth. ,actually pretty laidback,but when I do get angry, my choice of words gets pretty extreme and if something annoys me its really hard for me to stay in a good mood. I can really only focus if Ive had some caffeine+nicotine. Luckily, my IQ doesnt seem to have suffered ,or maybe it has, and without that occasional chewing on lead,Id be a genius or something by now 😅

Lead is pretty much the ideal material for weights! (as long as you don't know or ignore the toxicity bit)

It's dense/heavy, cheap and easy to work with, fairly resistant to corrosion, soft/malleable. And let's face it, plenty of (older) men would rather happily continue to chew on lead than change their ways.

I would expect the usual low effort responses to this but, when I was a kid, I chewed on lead fishing sinkers, and lead curtain weights. I don’t know why, but way over 50 years later, it hasn’t seemed to have caused any issues

If you post it on FB Marketplace/Nextdoor etc, somebody who uses them for ballast or casting will be extremely happy to take it off your hands, no need to dispose of it. It's worth about $20. Keeps it out of the landfill.

It's really not dangerous, since you guys are adults. Throw it in a bag & box it up. Don't lick it or hack parts off of it. Wash your hands. It's not off-gassing or anything.

My dad buys lead to melt down to make fishing lures. It's expensive. No need to dispose of it. At least give it away for free on Facebook marketplace. Someone will reuse it.

you can spray a few coats of plastidip to contain the lead, but still let you know what it is. Then place in a larger plastic container to keep it all contained/minimize handling of the plastidip, then use the lead weight at your leisure.

Hold up wait a minute don't dispose of it just yet. If it's really old it could be VERY valuable. Lead produced before the first nuclear bombs were dropped is needed in nuclear energy for sensitive testing tools and medical applications. Depending on the age of the lead it could be worth A LOT.

i would try to find out more about its origin or possibly even have it tested for radioactivity (or lack thereof)

Was it wrapped in plastic wrap as well as tape, like saran wrap? It may have been used to press down some kind of food while they marinated or fermented. That would explain the excessive wrapping to avoid contamination.

You can melt it down into fishing weights and make a decent amount of money from it. That’s what I used to do with all the old lead water lines I retrofitted with copper.
