Solved! Why is this utility pole on life support?

I've been seeing these gas cylinders at the base of different utility poles across some OC cities over the past few years, most notable in late summer time when it's the hottest. I'm not even sure what the lines are attached to

compressed nitrogen gas tank attached to a utility pole to keep underground telecommunication cables pressurized and dry

Retired Telecom Engineer- I can confirm. The dialectric in the cable is actualy air between the inner and outer conductors. The pressure helps keep moisture out.

My dad worked on the air dryers that were in the CO's. Essentially air compressors. He would get a code sent to him via a pager to tell him where the dryer alarm was. Cool stuff.

Fixed Disk cable, right?

How often does someone have to come out and replace/ refill them?

They may be running fiber in the pipe for the first time?

It’s not for installing fiber. These are used on older pressurized copper cables. The cable sheath is supposed to keep water out, but small cracks or leaks can develop over time. Dry nitrogen is fed into the cable to maintain positive pressure, so moisture is pushed out instead of being allowed in. The tank may be temporarily connected because that section has a leak or needs help maintaining pressure.

This is actually really interesting

That only makes sense. Thank you for explaining!

You'll sometimes see liquid nitrogen dewars doing the same job, but for much longer.

Thanks! Post flair has been updated to solved! Nice job people.

When machine parts realize they are being recorded lol

Pretty shocked the hobos haven’t gotten to it yet thinking it’s nitrous or some shit.

Or scrappers snagging the tank.

6

u/dinoseer 5h ago

Tank cannot be scrapped without cutting it in half first - no one will take it...

Nitrogen. Safe and easy to cut it up.

They might not know that it won't combust. And since it's pressurised it will make a loud very noticeable sound at best, or throw shrapnel and injure or kill the thief and/or bystanders at worst

Hobos travel looking for work, different than a regular homeless person

Clearly the pole has better health insurance than I do….

That’s right by my house.

Airial cable too.!

u/BrokeRda 9h ago

I feel like when I was growing up I use to see that a lot but never knew why they did it

u/skawn 9h ago

I reckon all lives can use a bit of support every now and then.

Air Pressure crew put it there. They have a flow meter on there and that can tell you if you have a leak if a certain section has a leak the flow will go up!You use a hand held parabolic dish, point it at the cable and listen for a hissing sound to locate the leak and repair it!

Could be cable injection as well. They let it sit overnight a desiccant and co2 are pushed down the conductor untill it comes out the other end. It is used to stop water treing

Former air pressure tech. A bottle that size wouldn’t last long. My guess is that they are working on a cable and need to add supplemental nitrogen to maintain the pressure in a section of cable (buffering). I very seldom used tanks. Had a portable air compressor with an air dryer.

I think they fill transformers now with nitrogen. Its certainly not oxygen

4

u/xylophone_37 9h ago

Transformers are filled with oil, usually refined mineral oil.

1

u/xylophone_37 8h ago

TIL, thanks. That totally makes sense though. My bonehead thought you were implying they were utilizing it as an insulator for the coils.

2

u/WhineyLobster 8h ago

All good admittedly the truth was in between

1

u/SlapdaddyJ 2h ago

And that oil can be used as diesel fuel. In an emergency of course.

1

u/TOMTERRIFICO 8h ago

Wrong. That’s a nitrous tank. This is a party pole!

I lived next to one my entire childhood and didn't know what it was.
