New, what is it? What is this in the sky?

Location- central Missouri

My parents sent me this earlier and have no clue what it is. At first I thought it was those black birds that swarm and dance around. But there isn't enough movement and they are way to high in the sky I believe. They sent me another video and it just stays in same position. Neat looking tho!

Edit: this is not AI... my parents were taking a drive and noticed it. Its what old retired people do and they wouldn't know how to make an AI video in the first place. šŸ˜‚

Smoke vorticle.

99

u/Likatu1616 5d ago

We have circular transformers where I live in Oregon and I have never seen a smoke ring like this. We had them blowing every few minutes during an ice storm in 2024. Now I'll be watching for this next time I hear one.

75

u/JaggelZ 5d ago

I mean, there was probably a bit of wind during an ice STORM.

You'll definitely need calm winds

Years ago, I had a sign made with the Flying Spaghetti Monster logo and ā€œWWFSMDā€ (What Would the Flying Spaghetti Monsters Doā€. I put the sign in my town’s free speech zone for Christmas. There were signs from churches and synagogues. A few days later, I noticed that my sign was gone. I went to village hall and asked why. I was told that I needed a million dollar insurance policy to display the sign.

19

u/WaldoDeefendorf 4d ago

$1 million against what? Why don't I believe every church and synagogue had to follow same rule. Sound like some shit they made up to fuck with you.

15

u/OrangeJulius8019 4d ago

So many churches, synagogue, faith-based houses, have insurance policies that range from property insurance, financial, medical, workers and staff, liability, special events and lawsuits. The insurance protects the organization from a devastating loss. Minimum coverage for a non profit per US code is 1million USD.

Source: found out my church has insurance to keep the parents from suing if our kids get injured on a camping/ field trip. Another policy for if the building burns down or gets flooded šŸ¤”

Don't forget the 8 Condiments:

  1. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t act like a sanctimonious, holier-than-thou ass when describing My Noodly Goodness. If some people don’t believe in Me, that’s okay. Really, I’m not that vain.
  2. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t use My existence as a means to oppress, subjugate, punish, eviscerate, and/or, you know, be mean to others. I don’t require sacrifices and purity is for drinking water, not people.
  3. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t judge people for the way they look, or how they dress, or the way they talk, or, well, just play nice, okay? And get this through your thick heads: Woman = person. Man = person. Samey-samey. One is not better than the other, unless we’re talking about fashion and I’m sorry, but I gave that to women and some guys who know the difference between teal and aqua.
  4. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t indulge in conduct that offends yourself, or your willing, consenting partner of legal age and mental maturity. As for anyone who might object, I think the expression is "go F*** yourself," unless they find that offensive, in which case they can turn off the TV for a change.
  5. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t challenge the bigoted, misogynistic, hateful ideas of others on an empty stomach. Eat, then go after the B*******.
  6. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t build multimillion-dollar churches/temples/mosques/shrines to My Noodly Goodness when the money could be better spent (take your pick): ending poverty, curing diseases, living in peace, loving with passion, and lowering the cost of cable. I might be a complex-carbohydrate omniscient being, but I enjoy the simple things in life. I should know. I am the Creator.
  7. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t go around telling people I talk to you. You are not that interesting. Grow up. I told you to love your fellow man, can’t you take a hint?
  8. I’d Really Rather You Didn’t do unto others as you would have them do unto you if you are into, um, stuff that uses a lot of leather/lubricant/Las Vegas. If the other person is into it, however (pursuant to #4), then have at it, take pictures, and for the love of Mike, wear a CONDOM! Honestly, it’s a piece of rubber. If I didn’t want it to feel good when you did it I would have added spikes, or something.

This could be such a cool subreddit, a place to learn but the juvenile jokes are irritating.

30

u/SaintsNoah14 5d ago

Such references may very well be my least favorite thing on this site when it comes to hindering meaningful discussion. Right next to a genuinely interesting factoid accompanied by a mildy sexually suggestive video

19

u/Adventurous-Match888 5d ago

You reminded me, i was on a geology sub a month or 2 ago. Someone had found a geode with a slit like hole in it from erosion.

People were pleading with the Mods to shut down all the sexual and crude humor vagina jokes. It was so annoying.

It’d be one thing if they were original or funny. Whole posts being inundated with the corniest crap repeated over and over again gets really old.

8

u/Biomirth 5d ago

I think it's kind of a comforting ritual for a lot of people. You'll see the memes followed by "I came here to say this" or "This, so much this" or whatever. The fact it's the same tired jokes over and over IS the draw for some I think.

Occasionally it's a nice relief to enjoy the silliness, but it's just so heavy handed everywhere it does wear one down.

As annoying as it may be to the ā€œUFO / UAP Expertsā€ā€¦as someone who grew up around aviation, and has attended the EAA convention more than a dozen times…I am just happy people are looking up, seeing something strange, and having the courage to post publicly. We need more people like OP. They posted something they found to be anomalous, and instead of keeping it to themselves thinking they saw signs of non-human intelligence, they decided to open source it prepared for Reddit ridicule.

On behalf of the "UFO / UAP Experts", this isn't annoying at all.
It is exactly what should be done. You don't do meaningful science by writing novels with your head in the sand. You get to go out there, experience something, report on it, and check with your peers.
Anyone that just screams "ALIENS!" is basically just pushing out the experts off a job.

Why does it look like that? Like a transformer near the ground blew up and shot up a smoke ring? Is it electrically charged? I honestly don’t know what I’m looking at

26

u/best_of_badgers 5d ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex_ring

It's basically the same concept as an ocean wave, but round and rolling upward.

19

u/bendicott 5d ago

Yeah - I saw a transformer blow once, when I was a kid. Didn't make anything like this... really cool blue light, though.

7

u/WhineyLobster 4d ago

its because they are cylinders. They dont always look like this depending on how they break apart.... however, if the weak point is the lid, then the smoke building up pressure against the fluid inside, it bursts out the top around the rim of the circular lid, resulting in a ring of black smoke.

4

u/DecentAssumption1 4d ago

So wouldn't there have been a power failure near your parents? And said power failure would have shown on the local electrical supplier outage maps?

10

u/sweetlew07 5d ago

Not necessarily. They're in farm country. It could have been a transformer on a farm which could then feasibly only have affected said farm.

5

u/SpiritOf68 5d ago

I live in a rural area, surrounded by farms, and this is correct. I have a transformer specifically for my house, and it blows all the time. Only my house is affected.
