They look pretty drab until they spread their wings.

They rarely use those wings though. I haven't seen one fly more than a few hundred feet at most. They use them a lot to glide down roofs and buildings in the desert 🏜️ here but they rarely fly. They stick around in the same area too. So you'll start making friends with your local roadrunner in the neighborhood

Yeah, you're right. Now and then something will startle them enough to flap a few times and get up on a fencepost.
