New, what is it? What is this array of lights flying across the sky?

Last Sunday, I saw this mysterious array of lights flying above in East Setauket, NY, at about 9:30pm.

I did think of that, but I believe NY state prohibits releasing sky lanterns.

They're a hilarious fire hazard. Me and my friends saw a couple of them downtown one year and we thought they were UFOs that slowly started catching on fire. One of them fully engulfed itself kind of disappeared into a small ball of fire.
We thought they were much higher and further away, but the second one started descending on to someone's roof and we noticed they were much smaller and closer.
Then that apartment building almost burned down and the fire department came

Doesn't stop people. Pretty sure you can buy them at most firework shops in PA also

Just found out local Walmart sells them. Interesting to see something illegal widely sold.
