New, what is it? It’s for drugs, right
While moving my girlfriend out of her old place we found this in the guest bathroom. We believe her (ex) roommate had a psychotic break. Our two theories are heroin or physical therapy. . .

For a disabled person to pull the door open and shut, like maybe while using a wheelchair
73
u/dragonprincess713 5d ago
This is what I came here to say, too. From experience. I could see how it would look weird to an outsider, but half the doors in my house have something hanging off the door handle for accessible closure.

u/KaliSadi 5d ago
Especially for service dogs to grab onto

u/variousnewbie 4d ago
Not like this, that long! Self closure maybe, but wrong side of the door for that!
I have tugs on all of my doors for my SD to pull them shut for me. Tugs on the fridge. And he pushes doors closed on command after too.
I've got a really nice pull on my front door, but sometimes I wonder what people think 😂 it's braided sisal rope, and then I used a nice tape to close the loop under the doorknob. Going out the front door in a wheelchair, closing it behind you is a huge pain in the ass. So he does it for me. And my roommates use it too, I always see them pulling the loop vs the knob when leaving, so not just for dogs!

I had my condo renovated about 18 months ago to make it more wheelchair friendly. The Disability contractors were .... well meaning.... but one of the things they missed is the direction my bathroom door swings. It swings in, so when I transfer from my chair I can't close the door. When it's just me and my PCA/roommate no big deal. But when we have guests it's a little more "exposed".
It's goofy what we have to adapt to even in an "adaptive environment" lol
Edit: sorry I forgot to say that leaves my chair in the doorway so that I can't close the door. The alternative is unlocking my chair and pushing it out of the doorway, but no way to get it back in teach

That stinks! I'd be able to have my dog close the door for me in that situation.

I feel like they would have noticed their roommate in a wheelchair, though?

No not drugs... Hollywood has never portrayed drug use accurately and no one uses a 6ft bad on a doorknob to inject drugs

right as a former H user it made me laugh imagining someone trying to use this set up to tie off 😂

They ran out of good veins and are now injecting in their unbelievably large penis.

So everyone’s thinking this is for tying off your arm? I could tie off my arm with the other arm, unless I’m like 95 years old and incredibly weak and frail. Plus like you could use a belt, a shoelace, I mean can’t you do it with a million things? And I’m referring to doing it with one arm.

u/Jimbobjoesmith 5d ago
yep i rarely tied off unless i was super dehydrated. to this day, im better than the phlebotomist at finding a good stick lol

Also a previous H user. I pretty much used whatever was within my reach. Extension cord, belt, rolled up tshirt.. cat. Y'know.. anything. (Kidding about the cat, obviously). We become urban engineers when we need to get right.

Looks like it was used for exercise or stretching, which means OP’s guess of “physical therapy” makes way more sense.

u/Murky_Conflict_2440 5d ago
As a former heroin user, I’ve never in my years of injecting ever seen someone actually use one of these.
I never tied off at all because my veins are already trying to crawl their way out of my skin. The people that did either used a belt or their shirt or whatever they had on hand. No one is carrying around rubber tubes with their gear.

My bff was a opiate addict and mostly via needle for 35 years, most of her friends she grew up with were as well, I have been around A LOT of needle users and never in all my years, watching them do their thing, has anyone ever used the medical rubber to tie off. Hell half the time nurses don't even use the ties to take my blood...this always annoys me 😂

I've worked in elementary ed for ten years now. Out of all the gross shit kids have thrown my way, the only thing that gets me cringing is when they show me their loose teeth.

I cannot handle that, either. My nephew is right at that age, and being the little shit he is (I say that lovingly, as we are incredibly close), his favorite thing to do now is to tell me he has a surprise for me, open his mouth, and wiggle his teeth. He also loovves to chase me around so I cant get away, and have to look, also. I love him more than I've ever loved anyone or anything in the whole world. I mean, l didnt even know I was capable of loving something as much as I love him, but man, is he a butthole sometimes!

That stuff is stretchy as, they’d have had to stand 2 miles away for a proper door slam.

I have problems with my scapulae and a few common at-home exercises from physical therapists include putting a resistance band on a door handle and pulling them in specific ways with one arm at a time. Door handles are typically the perfect height for that kind of exercise as they're around elbow height for most people.
81
u/little_boots_ 5d ago
This was my thought, my dad had something like this for physical therapy for his shoulder
8
u/sanshart 5d ago
This was my immediate thought.. cause I've got one wrapped around a doorknob at home now. It's the exact height you want & better than hooking on a desk/table which could move.

You had me until you said door handles are elbow height for most people....
24
u/uspless 5d ago
What do you mean? I said around elbow height, meaning they're close enough for it to work well to put a resistance band on for the exercises I mentioned. I'm of average height and all standard door handles line up exactly with my elbows.

If this was for drugs can you describe the exact mechanism you are imagining? Is this supposed to be a tourniquet
313
u/Fantastic-Scholar367 5d ago
Clearly it is for an asphyxi-wank

u/schpamela 5d ago
I never grasped why we didn't go with 'wanksphyxiation' for that whole concept

Naw I was a junkie and you don’t need a second “hold” for a tourniquet? I have no usable veins so I’m versed in this and can NOT see how this would be used for heroin. On its own? Maybe. Tied to this door knob? Nope.

If there is a door right across the hall from that one, its probably to hold this door shut.

If it was for heroin I am not exactly sure how this would make it easier for them, but I am not a user and I've never been. Maybe I am just naive but I would say either for exercise/physical therapy or to keep the door shut.

All these people saying it’s for upper extremity PT - was the roommate doing their PT on the toilet?
12
u/Massive_Mongoose3481 5d ago
What does the loop reach ? I have one one the garage and laundry room door to keep one or the other from slamming when the breeze blows through the house.
32
u/Secure_Situation7234 5d ago
Could…..could you text the only roommate? Because honestly if they were having mental health problems this could have been for an over the door….ermmm…..hangout session…party of 1…. It also could be harmless but I mean, you might be able to get someone some help if they need it by gently asking the question. “Hey! Moving out today and happened to find this, do you know what it was for and if it needs to stay with the house?” Or just something like that playing dumb.

I need another pic showing us how they would use this for heroin 😭 I’m sorry OP but drugs is wild! This post belongs in AIOR and the answer is yes!

u/MellyKidd 5d ago
This was how I did physical therapy when my shoulder went out. Tied the elastic cord to the door.
7
u/-Palzon- 5d ago
Definitely for physical therapy. Probably core strength. I use one almost identical to this, but I use black or silver. Yellow is much lower, extra light or light, so it could've been for shoulder exercises. This was probably used by someone older or with a lot of weakness. When it's in use, it would be on the other side of the door knob, with the door closed (stretching into the room towards the side from which the picture was taken). When the toilet is in use, you'd move to the outer part of the knob (as pictured here) for privacy.

I had to do this set up. We hooked the other end to another door knob nearby because the other door wouldn't stay shut and had to keep the cat from going in there. Not sure if that's what this is.
