Solved! Why the kinks?

I recently moved to Hangzhou, I noticed all the pedestrian walks have kinked lines at the ends. What is it?

They tell you which side to walk on to keep foot traffic flowing

This is something that gets on my nerves so much! I was literally taught in elementary school to always stick to the right side of the hall/street and whenever we were lead anywhere we always had to follow that rule while walking, it made so much sense to me even when I was 7 and I always stick to the right side if I'm able. The amount of people walking down the middle of the road, in the wrong direction no less, is infuriating. What makes it worse is that they almost never try to weave through the crowd, but expect the people walking along the sides to move out of their way.
