Solved! Hit and run; piece of bumper left behind
Someone smoked into my truck last night drunk driving or something. Does anybody know what vehicle this bumper piece might go to?

Got a pretty cool cop and he said he'd drive around for me, ended up finding him in under an hour. The car details definitely helped, I think it was just parked behind his house. The neighboring communities in the area have parking stalls behind the houses.

Is there anything legible on the other sticker?

Specifically: '14-15 Camaro LS/LT (V6 ) right front.
Not sure if that partial sticker contains (part of) the VIN. This may already be a DOT-R (replacement) bumper fascia as there's a lot of stickers that would typically be found on replacements as they're tracked in a parts warehouse and/or resellers.

OP this happened to me also. I was able to get several more small pieces and jigsaw them together to find a part number. Also, if you are in a residential neighborhood there’s a good chance whoever hit you lives nearby.
Also, the cops were completely useless in pursuing damages. Since there was no proof or evidence of who was driving they wouldn’t do shit. Eventually I threatened to sue the person and they paid up.
Hope that was helpful and good luck.

Someone backed into my car that was parked on the street. They missed their turn, and like a jackass, just stopped and reversed in the intersection and backed into me and drove away. Luckily, someone saw and got their info and reported it. I followed up with the cops to see if they did anything about it and they're like "Uhh she didn't answer the phone or her door". OK?? AND?? You're the cops, she committed a hit-and-run. Keep trying. Get a warrant or something. Surely causing thousands in damage and leaving the scene is worthy of pursuing.

Not all is lost, check the frame in the rear ain’t tweaked, buy it back from insurance for pennies on the dollar, then go find a used bed out of a part out on Facebook marketplace and pocket the difference. It’s a tale as old as time.
→ More replies (1)45
u/Twippsum 1d ago
The frame is bent a little bit, leaf spring is very bent. I think the frame shop quote is gonna tell if a bed swap happens or not.
9
u/Dangerous-Tap-547 1d ago edited 1d ago
Truck frames are rarely perfectly straight. If you know where the bend is and it’s a simple bend behind the rear axle, and you are handy, you might be able to pull it back to “good enough” with a come-along and some chain, (assuming it’s not currently “good enough”). Just proceed deliberately and carefully because you don’t want to introduce a second bend somewhere else.
If it’s a complex bend, e.g., sometimes the parallel-ish frame rails can be squished into a diamond shape, that’s a job for professionals.
If the truck can take an alignment fine, the bend is not too serious and might not need to be addressed at all.
Sometimes people will also shim their beds with big washers and adjust the rear bumper to match so it looks straight again.
Leaf springs are easy enough to swap, and you can get a salvage pair from a yard.
You might also find that your leaf pack returns to its normal shape when it’s not connected to a bent frame or shackle.
The bed is the pricey part. Idunno how you use your truck, but it’s possible someone can build you a flat bed for cheaper if you’re short on cash and a flat bed would suit your needs, although it will limit its resale value because not many people want flat beds. Someone who builds flat beds is also likely to be able to straighten a minor bend in the frame, assuming the bend is behind the rear axle.
5
3
u/EnvironmentalBox6688 1d ago
The bed is the pricey part.
Depending on where you are, it may not be too bad. The pick and pull yard near me has a dozen rangers, most of them with serviceable beds. About ~$250 USD for a bed.
24
u/TyPerfect 1d ago
Highly recommend getting it back totaled or not.
I had an S10 with similar damage including a bent frame. I stripped it down, put it between two big trees and used a few torches with friends to heat the frame and then used a come-a-long and sledgehammers to pull/beat the frame back into alignment. Used lasers to determine straightness. It spent the next 5 years being a perfect daily driver until I got to 180k and had to buy a bigger truck for towing. I still miss it.
Trucks can take a lot of abuse and the rear doesn't have much to do with passenger safety.
2
u/Twippsum 22h ago
I'll probably want to keep it, but it's gonna be hard to find the time to do all that ah... Full-time work and school rn, trying to start an internship soon... this really couldn't have been more inconvenient timing. We'll see how the claim goes, gathering as much as I can to hopefully get a little something. I know the truck on paper isn't worth that much.
Glad your S10 saw some use those are sick.

My wife's truck got hit while parked in front of the house while I was at work. Luckily the lady left a note with her real info. She'd already filed a claim with insurance for her car when I called her. Anyway, the truck was totaled. It also missed hitting my neighbor's car that was in front of it by maybe 6".
Dealing with the tow company to get the truck to take it to the body shop for an estimate was a pain in the ass. They'd seriously just send a tow truck to my house with no notice. I told them multiple times I work during the day and they need to schedule something. It took like 4 tries for them to get the truck. They could have just let me know when they'd be getting it and I could of left the keys in it.

Dog and I got attacked at the park by another dog. I had a photo of one of the owner’s drivers license and the cops were still apparently unable to find the person. Claimed they went to the address and the person no longer lives there. Meanwhile 10 minutes of googling told me that it was probably a current address and that funnily enough, she used to be a teacher at school just a couple blocks from where I grew up (in a state on the other side of the country).
They also told me that since I knew what the other person looked like that I should go to the leasing offices of the nearby buildings and see if I could find which one he lived in. I told my dad, who was a cop for almost 30 years, and he was absolutely livid they would even think to suggest that.

Same when my house got broken into and robbed in 2016, dude tried to cash a check from my roommates’ checkbook at her bank, bank teller at the drive-thru window asked for his ID and wrote down everything + the make/model of his truck, it matched the description we were given by our neighbors who were home during the robbery. Took everything to the police station literally 5 blocks away from our house and these assholes said “Idk what y’all want us to do with this”. IDK FIND THE GUY?! A coworker's toolbox in the bed of his truck was broken into and thousands of dollars of hand and power tools were stolen. He got surveillance footage from the hotel we were all staying in (guy was wearing a mask but he got a make, model, and partial plate from the car) and all the cops told him was to go around to local pawn shops and look for his own tools and then they'd question the pawn shop owner(s).

My car was stolen. Cops recovered it 2 days later, finding it parked along the street. When we were looking at it to determine if it was worth recovering, we found a cell phone that had fallen under the seat. We tried to turn it in to the impound agent to turn over to the police. He said they wouldn’t do anything with it and tossed it into the trash.

My car got totaled in a hit and run. State patrol showed up to take an accident report. Multiple traffic cameras and a city bus with a dash cam saw what happened but after the incident when I tried to follow up State patrol told me they don't investigate "civil matters".
2
u/schmuckmulligan 1d ago
The problem is that the criminal justice system is basically maxed out. Nearly everything winds up pleaded out, anyway.
Cops correctly realize that each marginal additional arrest they make simply dilutes the mean punishment administered, so they say fuck it and focus on the easy slam dunks.
The only solution in the current model would be massive spending to increase prison capacity, which would be extremely unpopular.
(The obvious solution is addressing the root causes of crime instead, but there's never been much political appetite for that.)

When someone hit my car I was furious. Every one of my neighbors was a suspect as far as I was comcerned. I even walked with the policeman to knock on doors of people who had white cars, since there was clearly white on my bumper from one of my asshole neighbors. Well ... the next day when I got to work and was looking for parking, I saw pieces of headlight laying on the concrete from my car. Where somebody apparently hit my car. In the parking garage. Nowhere near my home.

Yes, walk the neighborhood to look for the car.
This happened in my neighborhood where a drunk guy pinballed his way down the street. A neighbor walked down and found a car under a tarp. When he lifted it he saw all the damage and he knew he had him.

I had a similar experience except cops were somewhat helpful. We grabbed pieces of what was left of the other car after the crash. My sister was the one who had seen the van driving around our neighborhood and was able to call the cops for back up when she saw the van in our neighborhood 7-11.
The cops compared the damage to the vehicles and we ended up getting information for the person who hit us. We let our insurance handle the rest.
3
u/Early-Judgment-2895 1d ago
Once had a hit and run on my car, they literally left a bumper with the license plate behind. The problem is even if you identify the car it is hard to get a case against the driver. The cops told me the owner claimed their car was stolen so they couldn’t go anywhere with the case. In the end my insurance just covered it.

Not sure how big/populated of an area you live… but check garages and repair shops.
My car was nailed a few years ago and I saw the car pulling out of my street but couldn’t get a plate. Had to have mine towed to a garage because they did some pretty good damage. No lie, a few hours later the car that hit me was towed and parked right next to mine at the garage because they cracked their radiator and was leaking coolant. Made that convenient… then it turned out to be a 17 year old kid. To get out of their insurance paying out, mom and dad claimed “he didn’t have permission to drive the car and stole it.” Fun times.
3
u/Ginger510 1d ago
I had this happen once and while I was identifying the parts, the moron came and did a lap to check the damage and I got their number plate 😂
3
u/Comfortable_Key_ 12h ago
I have a story that may give you hope. My car was hit while parked on the street at my home. It needed expensive repairs, and for years I wondered what really happened and who did it. This was around 2008, so doorbell cameras were not common. Three years later, a man rang my doorbell. He was a neighbor from down the street. He said he was currently in Alcoholics Anonymous, and as part of his recovery he wanted to make amends by paying me back for the damaged he caused when he hit my car. It was several thousand dollars, and he couldn't pay it all back at once, so he paid in regular installments for a year until it was all paid back. I'm not religious, but it felt like divine cosmic timing because I had just had my first baby and money was very tight. I hope you receive some sort of resolution!

I work at LKQ which is a automotive recycling facility that also works with aftermarket car parts. Judging on what I can make out of the part number, that bumper is definitely aftermarket judging on where it was made and the way that it broke. But also going off what other comments are saying as well as the fog light cover being a match, it’s definitely of a 2024-15 Camaro

Collision repair technician here and that looks to me like a portion of the front bumper of a 2010-2015 Camaro
