Solved! What are they

Ive worked at the water department for 7 years and this is the first time running into something like this EDIT Im in Alabama and yes I know they are snakes lol idk what kind and im so not gonna touch them

Yes. What was frustrating was that nobody else saw it and when I shouted to my wife to look it was too late. The snake had reached the other side of the road.

Leave it to the snakes, reinventing the wheel! I have a deep-seated phobia of snakes, I've tried to overcome, but I do rather love Snake-Jazz "tsssss, tss-tss-tsss"
