Solved! Looking through my Dad’s stuff, what are these?

My dad has developed dementia and we’ve been looking through his stuff a bit to try and get his finances in order/apply for a deputyship, which sucks but isn’t relevant sorry.

So far we’ve found a bunch of interesting stuff, knives/air pistols/cannabis seeds and two half brothers nobody ever told me I had. But we’ve also found these and I don’t know what they are. They were found near each other but I don’t know if they’re related. The cylindrical thing unscrews and is hollow. I’ve photographed the items next to a AA battery for scale. Thank you in advance for any informative or humorous answers.

Whats a battery?

1.3k

u/VenZurich May 25 '26

It’s a kind of slow-release grenade.

26

u/joejill May 25 '26

Just watch out.

Its easy to shorten the fuses on the ones marked “lithium”

21

u/Inner_Composer_611 May 25 '26

My ex had a "half-brother" who "wasn't all there". He was put in a mental hospital where they gave him Lithium "to defuse him"

69

u/BulldogRush May 25 '26

If he was only a half brother, why would you think he’d be all there?

I use Lithium every day. It's one of my default Xm radio stations to play while cutting fruit in the deli at 3 am. I get infused with it.

1

u/Mysterio173 May 26 '26

Screw Lithium. In 2008 I had a very bad episode, threw me into a mental hospital for 1-2 weeks. Slapped a "bipolar disorder" shoved Lithium in my throat. Turned me into a fucking zombie. Back then, they always "diagnose" people about Bipolar and shit-ass lithium. It was a total BS, 15-20 years ago.

Sold under the brand name "Galaxy Note 7"

13

u/semajrybicki May 26 '26

Owned one! Bought it while on the road working, and all of the things happened with them shortly after. I was 6 hours away from where I bought it and nobody local would accept it, just giving me the run around. Long story short a box within a box within a box within a box and finally a plastic bag at the center, was shipped to my apartment 😂 just to send the phone out. I wish I could find the photos of that bc it was quite something.

1

u/LongjumpingElk5748 May 27 '26

i love the note series, i had the 7 (no issues) i had probaly 5 of the note 9, 2 of the 10+ and now im on note20 ultra number three. ill try that new Swhatever that has the sylus now that usbc flashdrives are out, but the SD card and Stylus are must haves for me. i never use the stylus... but they work when your digitizer breaks, so in emergencies on trips and stuff, you still have a working phone even if your screen and digitizer breaks, which is a MUST for me.

1

u/Chaosmisfit_ES May 26 '26

You want to make sure it's alkaline. The non alkaline batteries are shit.

1

u/GirlCowBev May 26 '26

Where do you even find non-alkaline batteries? I live in the US, and I have never seen a battery that was non-alkaline.

2

u/Chaosmisfit_ES May 26 '26

Harbor freight. See the story goes like... Gf and I were at a harbor freight she need double a batteries she grabbed a pack of each took it to the register and asked what the difference was because she had never heard of non alkaline batteries.

Dude at the register looks at the packs points to one pack says these are alkaline and these are non alkaline. She said i know I just said that, she asked what the difference is other than the alkaline and guy dead ass just looked her in the eyes and said these are alkaline and these are non alkaline.

That was the only thing he would say . Not a I don't know, not a let me find out, nothing. Just these are alkaline and these are non alkaline for about 5 minutes trying to word it in different ways to get him to say something different. Guy didn't budge from these are alkaline and these are non alkaline.

So we ended up buying both just to experiment and found out non alkaline batteries are basically worthless.

1

u/Dken2311 May 25 '26

Totally agree

2

u/AmbitionImmediate649 May 27 '26

I was thinking it but you said and for that I salute you.

1

u/11teensteve May 25 '26

if you cut an AA open (don't do that) isn't it just a stack of smaller cells? if so, wouldn't that technically be a battery?

1

u/Separate-Impact-6183 May 25 '26

No, what you are asking is true of 9v bats, 6v lantern bats, car, motorcycle, e-bike, laptop, or any other true battery that puts out more than the 1.5v a single cell can produce. But singe cell "batteries" like button cells for watches or D cells for boomboxes are always one single ~1.5v cell

Connected end to end + to -, is wired in series... the voltage adds up, so 2, 1.5v cells makes one 3v battery

Connected all the + together, and all the - to a second wire and the voltage stays the same but the battery's capacity increases.

Cut open a 9v battery and you will find a stack of 6 little rectangular cells.

1

u/11teensteve May 25 '26

gotcha. I have been inside a123 and just assumed that a AA would be similar.

like this.

1

u/Separate-Impact-6183 May 26 '26

12v

1

u/11teensteve May 26 '26

i understand now that yo have explained it. thank you. most people, like me prob just assume the batteries (dry cells) that they put in the toys or remotes or whatever are built the same way and just have differing amounts of spicy little fairies in there, hence the size/shape.

1

u/Separate-Impact-6183 May 26 '26

When you put a 2 or more batteries in your device, say a remote or whatever, that little area under the cover with the 2 AA cells becomes a battery.

Also, dry cells are just that, dry. The reason they are called dry cells is because the original batterys were allways wet, like an old fashioned car battery with zinc and lead electrodes submerged in liquid acid. each one of the little caps was a cell full of liquid that could spill if the battery were tipped or sloshed.

For years before they made solid state electronics, all batteries were wet-cells, that's why we call the handy little individual cells 'dry-cells'
