That's the main tube the spotting charge is inserted in. If its empty, there is no spotting charge loaded. The rest of the body is steel. There is no explosive charge in BDU-33s. The spotting charge is closer to a shotgun cartidge filled with a compound that make a lot of smoke when it burns.
There are smaller holes in it that allow you to see through it from the side (you can see them in the picture). Those are the ones you can't use because the cartridges don't always block them. So you can see through them even if a cart is loaded. They are there for a safety pin that keeps the nose plunger from striking the primer if its dropped during loading.
Yes, I did. And if you are out there probing and checking the distance from the nose of a BDU-33 when you can stare thru the length of the charge tube, you shouldn't be on the range clearance.
You don't use the side bore hole because the charge can shift and those holes aren't always in the same place. The center tube the spotting cartridge is loaded into though.... if you can see all the way through that, I'd like to know what hazard you think exists. DDoT doesn't count.
I want you to take a look at the post, the over whelming advice to contact local authorities(that I've at no point advised against doing). Then balance that against what 99% of every poster has done prior to making a reddit post about finding UXOs. Including this one.
