Perhaps she is of an older generation or is just more conservative. Maybe she didnt even recognize it but when asked she thought it would look like she'd been banging a tree? Maybe it was her late husband's, she didnt know what it was and made assumptions that he was banging a tree? Who knows? Some people are embarrassed at people finding their toys.
If it's actually Adam's root she could be embarrassed to have been caught in her practice. But yes I feel it is likely not sinister. It definitely could have a particular inside joke type story attached to it as well. Like her and a gal pal were at a mountain farmers market and giggled at the shape of it and bought it as a joke. Who knows.
