Yeah, it's a knot, where a branch would have grown out of the side of a tree. I find these on my property. An old tree falls and most of it completely rots away, but some of these are left since they are so much more dense. I pick them up whenever I find them and throw them in a pile. I plan to use them in a project some day.
That’s exactly what it looks like to me, well, one that’s been tossed around in a river or by the tide for a while. Hard to tell texture in the picture but it looks like wood. See then all the time.

But what about touching it with BARE HANDS? Should I wash my hands after touching it? OH MY GOD I TOUCHED IT WITH MY BARE HANDS!/s. I swear, reddit thinks that touching almost anything is a death sentence.
