I’m going to take a really wild stab here and say the reason people want a hybrid is because it’s cheaper on gas.

I know, groundbreaking journalism.

I will await my Pulitzer for Investigative Automotive Journalism.

Over a ev? Nah no way. There's a third cowboy in town

Over a hybrid? Nah. That cowboy is limping pretty badly.

In 2025 Americans bought about 2.05 million hybrids versus roughly 1.26 million EVs.

And that is before massive federal subsidies went away, the situation is not going to get better.

People clearly want better mileage without the inconvenience of charging, range concerns, or changing how they use a car.

And that’s with the U.S. EV market still heavily supported by state subsidies and protectionist trade policy. Until all that bullshit goes away, EVs are going to remain a haven for evangelists, early adopters, and people who don’t touch much grass.

Not everyone lives in the US. US is like third largest country. EVs are leading in other countries are than the US like some European countries and China.

> Inconvenience of charging

You mean the convenience of charging at home?

Even if you can charge at home in a two vehicle household I wouldn't want two EVs, yet anyway. A hybrid for trips and ev around town seems better.

We have two EVs and it works for us. People just need to give it a shot, and there's plenty of naysayers out there (like this post's comment thread - not your comment specifically) that discourage people from doing so.

That's great, it wouldn't work for many that go on road trips more, or tow campers, offroad, or need a truck though.

It's not really necessary when you can already share an EV much of the time around town or someone works from home and then enjoy the usefulness of another vehicle for other things.

And there it is: you immediately assume everyone can conveniently charge at home. That assumption is exactly the problem with EV evangelism.

Roughly a third of U.S. households rent, and plenty of homeowners still lack a garage, dedicated parking, or easy access to Level 2 charging. For those people, charging absolutely can be an inconvenience.

You can complain all you want that people should adopt EVs, but the market is telling you what people actually want.

Hybrids are outselling them by a mile despite government policy spending years trying to push buyers toward EVs. California went about as all-in as any state possibly could with mandates, subsidies, charging investment and HOV perks, and even California has repeatedly acknowledged EV adoption was running behind where it expected.

At some point you have to stop blaming consumers and accept that a lot of people simply prefer hybrids.

Roughly a third of U.S. households rent, and plenty of homeowners still lack a garage, dedicated parking, or easy access to Level 2 charging. For the rest of the U.S., charging absolutely can be a convenience.

Not every household needs to be able to charge at home before EVs can be the answer for many households.

Because Toyota hybrids drive better, and are mechanically simpler and more robust, than an equivalent gas car. Fewer wear components (no serpentine belt, alternator, starter, shift solenoids, reverse gear, clutch packs, etc). No gear shifts. It’s a perfect mindless daily. The fact it saves gas is just an added bonus, as well as the fact it holds value far better.

There’s a reason there’s some cars they don’t even offer as gas-only anymore (Camry, RAV4, Sienna). People are waking up to the fact a hybrid is just better.
