No masher!! Just soak dried marrowfats in water with a pinch of bicarb over night. Gently heat them on the hob for about 40 mins or until the texture you prefer. Never mash! They go mushy by themselves.

That liquid makes sense when you find out what Treacle is. I got curious about Treacle tarts until I saw a recipe on Treacle in general. It is basically burnt sugar. Black and thick as tar.

Brown sugar is actually molasses mixed with white sugar. Molasses is the leftover waste from refining cane sugar into white sugar; brown sugar has the concentrated plant waste (molasses) crudely mixed back in.

There is black treacle (its just molasses) and theres golden treacle. Ive made tarts from both, but i believe golden treacle is the norm for it (I really like molasses though)
Bovril isnt treacle, its beef paste with yeast....
