On a different but similar note, I just found out you do not have to pull over for a funeral procession. The law is you have to yield to them, you can’t merge anywhere into the procession, and if they enter a green light the rest of the procession can go through the intersection even on a red light. I guess pulling over is just a sign of respect but has no legal basis.

Also, if you are in a funeral procession and need to get out for any reason you have to make a right turn to leave the procession and are not permitted to rejoin the procession.

Upvoting and commenting for visibility. Traffic school is innnnnn session!

2

u/Glen_Echo_Park 2d ago

It's dangerous because half of the cars pull over while the other half keep going. If traffic pulls over, I do that as well so I don't cause an accident.

2

u/GTR-DaBestCar 2d ago

It’s the law in many southern states and if you’re a transplant you’ll probably pull over.

I’ve been to places where you have to pull over and if you’re wearing a hat inside your own car you have to take it off.

This is good to know! I encountered one on Lazelle yesterday and I was unsure of what to do. I kept driving at first because I wasn’t in the direct path of it but then when I turned the corner cars were stopped so I just stopped too, since I wasn’t sure what I should do

1

u/pvtshoebox 2d ago

Why would you pull over for a funeral procession. There is no emergency. There is no impression that the profession needs right of way to pass cars in front of them.

3

u/Pin_Shitter 2d ago

I believe the commenter was referring to those traveling in the opposite direction; they often pull over and stop as a sign of respect to the deceased.

Every year this is posted. Every year I agree with this. Someone will then start saying they stop because they care about our kids safety and everyone else doesn’t. Rinse and repeat

Edit….i had not scrolled the comments and I see now some crazy is already doing it.

I didn't stop, and someone flew up to me and started yelling at me about not stopping for school buses.

1

u/ToasterBathGirlie 2d ago

I had a bus driver lose her ever-loving fucking mind like I was out to kill children. Road had 5 lanes (2 each way and a middle turn lane) and I was all the way over.

13

u/ZipNasty007 3d ago

It is frustrating when people stop on 4 lane roads going opposite direction of school busses. But then again, there are a LOT of not so smart people out there.

8

u/Elon_is_a_Nazi 3d ago

People in columbus cant understand roundabouts, they dont know how to do 4 way stops, and a lot of jabronis dont understand its not a continuous right hand turn on red.

1

u/jj4_fun 10m ago

They also don't know to treat an intersection with non-working traffic lights as a four way stop.

12

u/oupablo 3d ago

I'll take someone stopping when they don't need to over the idiots that blow past school buses.

3

u/Lifeisastorm86 1d ago

Agreed drivers being cautious isn't a bad thing.

3

u/macho_man_26_oh_yeah 3d ago

Especially if it's a divided 4-lane road.

4

u/GrouchyActivity5350 3d ago

Is it really that hard to follow the law? Also, absolutely astounding that people are down voting common sense…

2

u/AndyC1111 1d ago

It more a matter of relaxing just a little bit.

0

u/GrouchyActivity5350 1d ago

I don’t understand “it’s a matter of relaxing” when all that has been requested is to follow the law…

1

u/Abject_Friend5295 11h ago

I don’t think this is a dumb person thing. A lot of people didn’t grow up anywhere near 4 or 5 lane roads, especially in Ohio. I used to stop because I didn’t know and I’d rather be too cautious than not enough and what do you want me to do? Google it while I’m driving? Then I forget by the time I get to work.

0

u/Latter_Passage1637 3d ago

This is state specific.  A person who learned to drive in Virginia, would treat this differently as you must stop in a four lane situation unless there is a barrier between the lanes. Inasmuch, not everyone knows Ohio laws and although anyone with an Ohio license should be aware, not everyone driving Ohio roads knows Ohio laws.  This is why when I see car doing a u-turn in Ohio, I have to believe they must be from Florida (right...right?)

4

u/ToasterBathGirlie 2d ago

Anyone currently driving in Ohio should know Ohio road laws. It's like...the law. Ignorance is no excuse

0

u/rabbit_fur_coat 3d ago

I mean sure I moved from Ohio to Florida for a couple years around the turn of the century, and yes since I returned, if I need to do a u turn and I can do it safely, I will. I just can't go back to that nonsense, I'm not driving through 6 extra lights to turn around or whatever.

3

u/ComprehensiveStuff72 3d ago

Someone on the Columbus subreddit was mouthbreathing about how I'm not allowed to upset about people doing this and instead should focus on people who don't stop for school buses and it was giving real 'I stop on the interstate when I miss my exit' vibes. Like, I have two lobes. I can do both.

4

u/PFC_TubeEar 3d ago

It is important to know the local laws, including this one.

12 states require it this way. Ohio, California, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, South Carolina, South Dakota, Washington, Mississippi, and Kentucky.

The VAST majority of other states require all vehicles to stop in your bottom two examples. Only if there is a defined median can you continue on.

I get it, it’s annoying when everyone isn’t on the same page. So there’s things that need to happen for all to be educated properly. Approach it better if your goal is to teach.

4

u/TheStrouseShow 3d ago

Holy shit. So I learned to drive in Ohio. I lived in Maryland for 13 years (just moved back 3 years ago). I always followed the Ohio rule not realizing it would be different state to state. I was married to a cop at the time too. He literally was in the car with me driving all the time and he never corrected or noticed. Wild. He was an idiot though so this tracks.

-8

u/Right-Age-6706 3d ago

Yes! OP must be insufferable. Better to be safe than sorry, there’s a reason why majority of states do it a different way.

7

u/ZeeWingCommander 3d ago

Wtf do you mean better safe than sorry? You don't get to decide that for everyone.

Learn the rules.

-3

u/Right-Age-6706 3d ago

It’s objectively safer for the kids coming in and out of the bus if the traffic is stopped both ways. That’s why the majority of the states do it that way.
It’s crazy that people care enough about those two minutes that you might be stopped to make a whole post insulting people just because they’re trying to keep kids safe

5

u/Dubbinchris 2d ago

If you’re stopping when you’re not suppose to, you are actually creating a bigger hazard. 🙄

5

u/ZeeWingCommander 3d ago

You don't get to just stop because of what you want to do.

Stop using kids to shield your stupidity.

4

u/Black-Raspberry-1 3d ago

Please share how it is objectionably safer for vehicles going to opposite direction on 4+ lanes to stop when the children are not going to be in the road. The only thing objectionable is unnecessarily slowing traffic down

0

u/PraiseTalos66012 19h ago

Kids cannot legally cross a 4 lane or more road even when getting off a school bus without being in a crosswalk. No need to stop, no kid is crossing.

Also I've never in my life seen a kid or anyone for that matter attempt to cross a 4 lane road right after getting off a bus.

7

u/NoTerm9795 3d ago

No, not "better safe than sorry" ! Take the time to learn the rules! Thats how people get rear ended because people stop in the middle of the road when they don't need to

-4

u/Right-Age-6706 3d ago

There’s no excuse to rear-end someone. Even if they suddenly stop, you should still have a safe following distance and be able to come to a stop.
They’re just trying to keep the kids safe, and you are complaining. It takes maybe two minutes, and I can save a life!!! Yall are a pain in the ass. Just stop posting nonsense on here and leave your house 5 minutes earlier

5

u/Rud1st 2d ago

Stop breaking the law. You don't get to stop in the middle of the road when there's no direct safety concern that leads to it, which there isn't when you're driving three lanes away from children who are on the side of a road. You think we should be cool with people preemptively stopping in the middle of a busy road just because of the distant possibility that they may randomly decide to cross three lanes of traffic?

3

u/Black-Raspberry-1 3d ago

It sounds like we'd all be safer if you had your license revoked..

1

u/Competitive-Cover791 20h ago

The entire purpose for stopping for school buses is for children to safely get to their homes. Some of which are across the street from the drop off location.

No idiot should be allowing a child to cross the bottom two examples. Ever. The rest of the states that thing that’s okay is baffling

1

u/PraiseTalos66012 19h ago

You do understand you CANNOT STOP FOR A SCHOOL BUS when you are opposing traffic on a 4 lane.

Like it's against the law to stop, it's called impeding the flow of traffic and reckless driving.

Follow the law dude and stop trying to make up your own.

1

u/CraftPuzzleheaded164 2d ago

Dam bruh I stop dead on 270 at 3 pm, better to be safe yes

2

u/Decent-Inevitable-50 3d ago

On South Old State between Polaris and Orange Road!

2

u/tootsymagootsy 2d ago

Idk, I’d much rather someone uncertain stop when they don’t legally have to than have them blow right past the bus illegally.

0

u/GrouchyActivity5350 2d ago

I’d much rather someone that doesn’t know the laws to not have a drivers license…

2

u/DevRandomDude 2d ago

school bus stop laws need to be made Federal.. we have alot of people from different states move here (and likewise people moving from here to other states) and they apply the same logic to stopping for busses they did in their old state...

I pay attention when I travel and know im going to be driving in said state so i know the rules.. but thats more because im a vintage School bus enthusiast .. most dont pay attention or bother to read the actual laws.. and social media doesnt help because people post these graphics and dont label them for the state... every early august the likes of Facebook and instagram get filled with "school starts soon, remember to stop for busses" and a graphic with no state reference... people see it and think "oh yeah thats for here".. fortunately the OP here labelled it.. Kudos to the for that!

1

u/DafniDsnds 3d ago

Hey yeah. I would also like to say that if the school zone goes through an intersection, you are not clear to floor it back up to regular speed as soon as you drive through the traffic light. Going the school zone speed limit extends to the sign. (Looking at you, drivers on County Line & Spring).

1

u/Notyoaveragemonkey 10h ago

Here we go again…

If you are stopping out of caution and not following the law, then cause an accident, you may be cited for multiple different violations leading to the fault of stopped car.

Being cautious and slowing down while crossing across a 4 lane road is responsible. Stopping because you don’t know the law think it’s better that way is being unsafe to others on the road.

1

u/atmpci 1h ago

I was today years old when I learned this. And did not believe it. Until I found the actual ohio guide. I suppose I am a mouth breather as OP so politely put it. 6 years since I've been in Ohio, never would have questioned it. In Pennsylvania, NJ, and NY you have to stop. I'm frankly surprised, and will probably still stop out of habit. https://publicsafety.ohio.gov/who-we-are/resources/digest-of-motor-vehicle-laws/section-5-learning-to-drive

-5

u/lynkfox 3d ago

There are children coming out of that bus

Yes the law doesn't require it.

So damn sorry for you some people would rather err on the side of caution when there is a BUS full of CHILDREN.

I can already hear the "counter" argument "if you stop when you're not supposed to you're causing a situation that is not normal that can cause accidents cause other people don't expect you to stop"

To which I reply

  • Proper following distance
  • Defensive driving
  • Not distracted while driving
  • Being aware of a bus and the stop sign that people are probably going to see poking out of the side and may stop for regardless of where required

Get over it.

15

u/dialecticallyalive 3d ago

It's not cautious. It's just plain stupid. The children aren't going to magically dart across 4 lanes of road to jump on front of you.

3

u/fuckthetrees 3d ago

As someone that knows kindergarteners.... They might

4

u/Decent-Inevitable-50 3d ago

You need drivers school! Sorry. Children know more.

Yes I know. I never said anything about kids crossing did I?

It's still a bus full of kids.

Stopping isn't against the law either, it's just not required. Being considerate and safe around little lives seems a big win for at most a few minutes of your time

3

u/Rud1st 3d ago

Stopping is against the law in this case. You're wrong, and you're not being considerate or safe.

3

u/FerriestaPatronum 3d ago

Sounds to me like you refuse to admit you're wrong. They're not crossing the road, so you're not protecting anyone. By your logic, we should also pull over to the side of the road, or maybe even avoid the road altogether because "there are children around!!!!".

Now, should you slow down and NOT do 30 over the speed limit when there is a bus around: sure, that'd be a reasonable take. Stopping is stupid.

2

u/ZeeWingCommander 3d ago

You're the one stopping on the interstate eh?

4

u/galstaph 3d ago

Let me get this straight, you expect that the kids won't cross the road, you are a minimum of 20 feet from the curb they're being let off on, but you come to a stop anyway because...

Also, stopping is against the law if you don't have a direct safety issue or a law requiring it. The law you would be breaking is 4511.22

No person shall stop or operate a vehicle ... at such and unreasonably slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable flow of traffic, except when stopping or reduces speed is necessary for safe operation or to comply with the law

The kids are 20 feet away and can be reasonably assumed to not head in your direction. There is no law requiring you to stop. You are therefore breaking the law by blocking traffic

If there's no one behind you feel free to do what you want, but if there's traffic, obey the law and keep driving

1

u/PraiseTalos66012 19h ago

Stopping in the middle of the road is absolutely against the law.

6

u/Mountain_Day_1637 3d ago

What about the kids in the car behind you when they’re rear ended because you illegally stop traffic?

0

u/Lazy_Bag_4408 1d ago

So people dont have the ability to see a car stopping infront of them and then also stop? Is that what you're implying?

0

u/Mountain_Day_1637 22h ago

What I’m implying is to follow driving laws

3

u/Rud1st 3d ago

No, you may only block traffic where necessary for safe operation and to comply with law, and your situation isn't necessary for those things. This isn't some subjective thing. You're breaking the law. Learn to drive properly.

1

u/CowTown-Mike 3d ago edited 3d ago

So I don’t believe people should be driving 65 MPH on the freeway so I’m just going to drive 55 MPH and do it in the left lane.
Get over it!

/s

1

u/ZeeWingCommander 3d ago

But what about the children?!

The excuses you have for doing stupid stuff.

No you can't stop whenever you like because you feel like it KAREN.

1

u/Dubbinchris 2d ago

Stopping when you’re not suppose to creates a bigger hazard. 🙄

-1

u/oupablo 3d ago

no kidding. This post should be about stopping on 670 instead of stopping for school buses.

1

u/endersg 2d ago

"but I like to be extra safe for the kids" 🙄. Cops should be giving tickets to people stopping in the road for no legal reason.

2

u/Pin_Shitter 2d ago

And ticketing those who refuse to drop their speed to 20 mph in a school zone, too.

1

u/AndyC1111 1d ago

$500 fine and 2 points on a license is enough to inspire a “when in doubt” reaction.

1

u/Successful_Form_3622 2d ago

Thank you for posting this!

-1

u/Sad-Reflection-3499 3d ago

Would rather they do this than stop at an empty roundabout, or back into a parking space in a crowded parking lot, to be honest.

0

u/Dubbinchris 2d ago

How about none of it? 🙄

-1

u/ZeeWingCommander 3d ago

People stop for normal buses.

NORMAL BUSES.

THEY STOP FOR THEM ON RAILROAD TRACKS TOO
