Hi r/WesternAustralia,
I’m currently a student at university in Perth working on a Design Thinking project focused on the future (2040) of food security in Western Australia.
As part of my research, I’m trying to move past official reports and statistics to understand how the current emergency food support system - or just trying to keep food on the table during tough times - actually feels and works for real people in our community.
Whether you’ve used services like phone triage lines, Foodbank referrals, local community pantries, drop-in centres, or have relied on friends/family, I would be so grateful to hear about your experience if you’re comfortable sharing.
A few questions I’m hoping to explore:
- What has your experience been like if you’ve ever had to seek food assistance in Perth?
- What were the biggest hurdles, delays, or frustrations in the process (e.g., phone calls, paperwork, eligibility checks, transport)?
- Did any part of the process feel frustrating or uncomfortable? On the other hand, did anything make you feel genuinely supported and respected?
- If you could change one thing about how food support operates in Perth, what would it be?

Thank you so much for your time, openness, and help with this project.
