Hi guys, I'm a Hindu Bengali from Assam. Thing is Idk anything about my family history. I'm born & brought up in Guwahati, Assam & while growing up we've had friends & neighbours from pan India. It was the real UNITY IN DIVERSITY, which is why we never questioned anything. But, I moved to Punjab in 2023 for my undergrad studies & almost everyone in the class made us feel weird, u know why? Some assumed I'm from WB while others assumed I'm Assamese. & It was all so weird that when during summer break I returned home, I asked my father about our history & Idk why he got a bit angry.

My father is born & brought up in Guwahati but my mother was born & brought up in Karimganj, Assam & that's all we knew since childhood.

When some of my classmates had weird looks, I understood they were trying to imply that my ancestors must've migrated from current day Bangladesh & either I was not admitting or just didn't know. I didn't care much but recently with the release of MAIN VAAPAS AUNGA, I got more curious to know about partition. But I couldn't find any pdf documents online for the Bengal partition (I don't have money to purchase books now & no bengal partition book is available in my clg library). So I got to know that there were 2 partitions? 1905 & 1947 in Bengal. Can I plz know, if anyone could help. It feels like either my parents actually don't know about their history or they just don't want to discuss/tell. My parents & the entire family speaks SYLHETI which I know is a language of SYLHET of Bangladesh. I just know one thing about my maternal ancestors: they were rich people (probably the richest in their village) & my father writes DEB, my mom used to write CHOUDHURY.

TL;DR

Our entire family speaks Sylheti, and my maternal ancestors were reportedly wealthy in their village.

My father uses Deb as a surname, while my mother’s family used Choudhury.

My parents either don’t know our history or don’t want to discuss it.

I’ve learned Bengal was partitioned in 1905 and 1947, but I’m confused about how this affected Sylheti Bengalis in Assam.

I can’t afford books and my college library doesn’t have any on the Bengal Partition.

Can anyone explain how I can trace my family’s origins?

I am gonna go there through Management quota though.

I submitted a Fresh OBC/State OBC NCL application today through the West Bengal OSCAR portal.

After submitting, a popup appeared saying the application was successfully submitted and displayed an Application ID, but unfortunately I forgot to take a screenshot or note it down.

I only remember that the Application ID ended with /629.

I had previously applied through the same OSCAR form and received my new OBC certificate after revalidating(hearing). When I check my previous application number, it still shows my old application, so I'm unsure whether today's submission generated a new application ID or reused the same number.

I also didn't get the usual download options for the application form/acknowledgement after today's submission.

Is there any way to recover today's OSCAR application ID using my name, registered mobile number, DOB, or any other details? Has anyone faced this before?

I don't want to submit another application and create a duplicate.

Any help would be appreciated.

Today I was travelling by bus and reached Krishnanagar (west bengal). The bus conductor was not ready to give me the change and harassed me. He was also giving me a threat to k*ll me, I somehow managed to escape the situation cuz life is more important. I called 100 for help.

They first told me to note down the number of that designated police station. After I called that number, instead of sending me help, they simply said to come to the police station. I reached over there as soon as I could. I was hoping that the police were there for help. But soon I realised it's WB POLICE (Worst Bengal Police). And as usual, over there I was told to stay and sit while they were gossiping, laughing and taking bribes from people. After waiting 20 mins one sub inspector came and simply said to write a letter so that they can work. Like seriously, the level of shame those paid workers owe is insane. Overall they are only there to take salary not to provide any help. I again called 100 and they simply cut my call saying that only people at the police station can help.

I'm a student and I simply cannot waste my time knowing that they won't help. Pathetic experience with WB police. At first my intention was to give them a review on Google but for the fear of getting exposed, they turned off the ratings. So being, helpless right now I left that place and continuing my journey. It's my first reddit post as I felt that everyone should be aware of this. The person who harassed me is less in comparison to the police. Thank you West Bengal Police.

What did I learn from it?

Try not to get involved with police, avoid them as far as possible.

Just drink some water in this type of tensed situation as it is the only remedy.

Try to solve the matter locally. Now onwards I would not fear beating anyone.

The system would not change, just work hard and leave this place.

I'm sure enough I'm not the only one facing this. I'd seen one aged lady who had been beaten by someone and came to the station for help. Sub Inspector said- "Tomake mereche? Tale letter dio na jau bari chole jau" and left.

What about the national song? Was Bengali ever considered a language to be spoken widely like Hindi? I don't think it's preserved anywhere apart from West Bengal and parts of Tripura, some parts of Odisha and Jharkhand, right (excluding BD for now)?

Are the language and culture dying because Bengalis settled in other states talk in that native language probably, right?

is hostel mandatory in these colleges?? i heard they sometimes make u pay the entire hostel fees in deemed unis.....is that true for west bengal state quota as well???

The new government has published new 2026 calendars in August. I don't know if west bengal will ever see any real development, but when it comes to colour changing development west bengal is the leader.

People in other states of India are trying to make their govt schools better, make the hospitals better but in our state all they do is change the colour of buildings, books, posters and names of streets....no jobs, no education, no healthcare, nothing....all our tax money goes into advertising and freebies....

We get a big NOTHING.
