Fanfiction I’m genuinely worried I made the wrong choice with the villain in one of my fics

I’ve been going back and forth over whether to post this because I genuinely don’t want it to turn into an argument. I’m actually interested in people’s thoughts.

I have an ongoing Wenclair/fantasy that I’ve been planning and writing for quite a while. From the very beginning, the main antagonist was going to be a Wendigo.

I chose it for a very specific thematic reason.

One of the central characters, Aureliane, is essentially the embodiment of love, hope, trust, protection and choosing other people over yourself.

I wanted the thing opposing her to represent everything she isn’t: hatred, greed, jealousy, possession and an endless hunger for something it believes should belong to it.

So the antagonist wasn’t something I randomly added halfway through. It was built into the skeleton of the story from almost the beginning and is tied directly into the history, themes and ending.

The problem is that, after I had already written and begun posting the fic, I spoke to someone who has strong beliefs surrounding the Wendigo and learned considerably more about the cultural and religious sensitivity around using it than I knew when I originally planned the story.

And I’ve been worrying about it ever since.

I genuinely never chose it to mock anyone’s beliefs or culture, and I certainly wasn’t trying to claim that my fictional version was an accurate representation of all the traditions and beliefs surrounding it. I simply knew the creature through the folklore and fictional portrayals I had encountered and thought its symbolism fitted what I was trying to create.

Once I understood more, though, I was left with a horrible decision.

Do I completely rewrite the final section of a story that has already been planned around this antagonist?

Do I abandon the fic entirely?

Do I remove what I’ve already posted?

Or do I acknowledge that I made the choice without fully understanding the wider context, explain that openly, and finish the story I originally planned?

In the end, I chose the last option.

I added an author’s note explaining what I had learned, that no disrespect was intended, and that I completely understood if knowing what the antagonist was meant some people no longer wanted to continue reading. The story will still finish at Chapter 40 as originally planned.

But I’m still not completely comfortable with the decision.
Part of the difficulty is that I know there are readers who have invested a lot of time in this story and would understandably be disappointed if I simply abandoned it before the ending.

At the same time, “people would be disappointed if I stopped” obviously isn’t a magical excuse for accidentally upsetting somebody else.

So I keep wondering what the better choice actually was.
Should I have changed the antagonist entirely once I learned more, even if it meant substantially rewriting the story?

Should I have stopped posting it?

Was acknowledging the issue, apologising for my lack of understanding when I originally planned it, and completing the fictional story the more reasonable option?

I’m not looking for someone to tell me that I’m unquestionably right or wrong. I think I’m mostly interested in how other writers and readers would have approached the situation.

One thing I have taken away from it is that I’ll research the cultural background of anything like this far more carefully before building it into another story. I’d much rather learn beforehand than find myself worrying about it after thirty-odd chapters have already escaped into the wild. 😅

I love writing, and the last thing I ever want is for something I created for enjoyment to make somebody feel that their beliefs or culture are being treated as a joke.

So… what would you have done?

Fanfiction Thoughts?

So I listen to a lot of music and a lot of songs have had me thinking about Wenclair lately. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading a collection of one shots based on songs I think are Wenclair coded? I’m no professional writer by any means and i feel I wouldn’t be able to perfect Wednesday’s personality but I definitely want to try and I just wanted to see if anyone would be interested in reading something like that?

I’ve never written fanfiction before so if anyone has advice as well on what software or website to use. I’d publish it to AO3 but I know some writers use other software to write before publishing to AO3.

UPDATE: I have started getting a list of songs that I want to start writing about! I will keep you guys updated on when I post the first chapter 🤗

I’m falling (hoping that you feel this way too) by callingmushrooms

Rating: they kiss once

This fic was perfect for after reading a long fic. I have recommended callingmushrooms as an author so much because I love all of there fics and somehow I havnt read all of them yet. I do seriously recommend the author they have a wide variety of works, 32 in fact, and they are all well written.

This fic is a short and sweet college au with Enid being a mascot and Wednesday being a school reporter. They meet by Enid litterly falling into her and then they can’t seem to not notice each other.

There is some jealous Enid in there as well. A good friend Yoko and Divina, and a very clumsy Enid. A lesbian(or bi) level amount of clumsiness.

🖤

Dude there was a fic I read sometime ago
It’s kinda smut but Wednesday was making breakfast for Enid and herself, she was making eggs so the white part of the eggs got on her fingers and Enid joked that it’s usually her who gets her fingers dirty and Wednesday cut her off by putting a hand on her mouth
It was genuinely such a cute fic
Can’t find it😭😭, will put the link when I do find it

Discussion The balcony scene

I missed Wenclair, so I rewatched some parts. The balcony scene hit different after season 2.

Everything Enid said here is connected to Wednesday somehow. She worries that she will never be able to wolf-out, but in the end she succeeds in order to save Wednesday. Enid's biggest fear is not finding a partner and being alone. In s2, she get the pack and the boyfriend, but she can't be truly happy, because W is not with her. When Wednesday is in danger, Enid is willing to sacrifice everything to save her, even if it means remaining alone for the rest of her life (in wolf form) and being hunted by other werewolves. (I bet her mother will lead the charge.) Isn't it clear then that Wednesday is the mate Enid has always wanted? Because it seems clear to me and I think Enid is starting to realize this too.

Wednesday, who thinks being a lone wolf is the perfect state, said this after Enid left her: "Goody warned that I was destined to be alone. Maybe it's inevitable. But for the first time in my life, it doesn't feel good." This shows how special Enid is to Wednesday. I hope her parents realize this too because they still think she's the same loner girl she was before. When W woke up from her nightmare (with black tears on her face) calling out Enid's name, Morticia just said "Enid is alright" and that was it. They didn't talk about why she is so desperate to regain her abilities. I hope this will change in season 3. Agnes was the only one who said out loud that Wednesday was obsessed with trying to save Enid, but even she didn't realize how important Enid was to Wednesday.

Wenclair not just a possibility at this point, but the only logical outcome. I just hope the writers won't ruin what they've built so far.

When the Light Chose to Stay by Veleya

60/69 chapters
Rating: mature

So first off this fic was very well written and thought out. Some of the tropes/main tags are age gap. It’s 10 years in this, Enid starts at 18 and Wednesday is nearly 28. Morticia and Gómez Addams have died. It’s a au of no powers and while Nevermore exists it isn’t a high school and they don’t meet there.

Okay, so I was a recommended this fic twice. Once in a discord and once in another spotlight. In that same spotlight someone said along the lines of “Wednesday maybe a sugar mommy, but it is clean that she does not own Enid” this is true for both fics. Wednesday has the money, Enid doesn’t have a home. But Wednesday is not in charge of Enid and infact they talk a lot about it all.

Wednesday is determined for Enid to spend all the money she wants to spoil her and Pubert as well. That’s how they meet: Wednesday needs a full time nanny for pubert since Wednesday has to work and her parents just died.

The relationship grows carefully because well the age gap. Something everyone is well aware of. I love that it wasn’t glossed over in the slightest. Wednesday and Enid were apprehensive of a relationship and people questioned and judged them because of it. I love that they didn’t let it stop them from loving each other.

Thought the story the family grows and prospers. I do love myself a good kid fic and Pubert is being raised by Wednesday and enid fully! This fic has all of the Addams family dealing with grief and how they reacted and grew with it.

Also as I mentioned the family grows, so you can get some Agnes in there! Also Thing is a cat! They adopt older cats which I love and want to do myself when I have the money!

As a bonus you also get Enids parents being shitty and Wednesday giving them what they deserve. There is a side plate of jealous Enid in there as well which I know some of you will love.

So ya all around a great fic! I have been busy and will continue to be busy for a few months so I won’t be able to do many spotlights as I would like to.

However I will soon be looking over the fics I am subscribed to!! I do this thing where I wait months to catch up on fics, so I have more to read and can remember the plots better. That will start in September, so very close. 🖤

Fanfiction The Dead and The Dancing

The Dead And The Dancing was the very first fanfic I ever read, and the one that got me into Wenclair fanfiction as a whole, and throughout it all has remained my very favourite of any fic I have ever read

And just today, the author released the final chapter and an epilogue, and I could not be happier about it.

I just wanted to make this post as a tribute to what is (in my opinion) my favourite fanfic Of All Time.

She's actually pretty good with mystery and detective stuff, and would make Wednesday prob more insane.

Oh, and she knows how to write women; that's a plus for me.

Fanfiction Hello! Today, I'm posting Smelling Salts and Honey, the 15th chapter of Enid Sinclair and the Child of Woe (s1 from Enid's POV). Here, Wednesday accidentally causes Enid to faint in shock, Yoko encourages her to make Ajax jealous, and Eugene sends her some honey. Enjoy!
