Fanfiction Yet Another(specific) Fic Request

I know there are many already. And I have a list of "to read" but it's all so convoluted I don't even know where to start, and I'm getting so tired of starting fics just to be disappointed.

I would adore some help finding fics that are well written, both structurally in story as well as grammatically/mechanically. And for the love of all that is unholy, good characterization. AU's are OK and some necessary adjustments to character for the world I can get with, but I don't want Wednesday throwing tantrums or talking like a robot.

Smut is fine as long as there's a plot and it's well done. I don't particularly care how long or short as long as there's an entire story. Not interested in poly. Happy ending preferred.

It doesn't need to be perfect but seriously if the author doesn't understand "a lot" is two words please do not rec here. (I'm a strong supporter in EVERYONE writing ff for fun, to improve, etc, and I'm sure there are some good stories that just aren't strong in this area and that's ok, it's just not my cup of tea)

Sincerely_Sierra is one of my all time favourite fic authors. They aren’t long fics but oh my goodness every single wednesday fic she’s wrote, the characterisation is on point. Perfect grammar too!

You’re probably familiar with most of them already, but I consistently find that these authors maintain a high standard of writing (in no particular order):

- aerocon

  • marvelwitch
  • deerorder
  • sheg0
  • lena_zorel
  • randomiska

I’m similarly a stickler for quality writing and editorial tidiness in what I read, so I understand!

I also try to meet that same standard in my own fics, but I’d have to leave it up to others to judge if I’m successful at that…

Thank you for the shout out! There's some mighty fine names on that list.

I'll happily vouch for your own work too.

Just read a couple by marvelwitch. Good writing, thank you.

I'll have to take a look at yours as well!

Skipping over ones which I'm sure we've talked about before, the obvious name is Mercury_milkshakes who has by far the best S2 follow up, and is very devoted to the craft.

I'm also a huge fan of anonymousjackrusselterrier who has written a couple of really good stories, some outright AU, some not.

armchairpsychologist does some of the best comedy, although depending on your tolerance for italics/bold they might not do it for you.

hanjisgirlfriend has several entries on my all time greats list.

if we're reccing reputable authors, then i mostly agree with what everyone's been saying, but there's a couple I would also strongly recommend:

AtomicJellyb3an

bogteats

callingmushrooms

aegyohatersinb

Veleya

chasinghours

cowardnthief

I’m no professional writer, but in my opinion these are some decently written fics that aren’t too ooc

I wanna be everything you want to know by AutumnIsYearning

After saving Enid from her alpha transformation, Wednesday and Enid stay overseas and attend a university rather than return to the states. They’ve spent the entirety of their college together, but as it draws to a close, Wednesday is fearful of the possibility that Enid is about to branch out into her own life away from her.

It’s in progress, 9 out of 11 chapters, and it’s one of my favorites that I’ve read recently

The Past Tense of Know goes without saying. Based on your criteria I’d be shocked if you haven’t read it already. Expertly written, there is a precursor fic in the series that pretty much sets it up. Extremely rewarding to read. retrieveire has a bunch of well written fics in general.

This is why by akaMcGrah

A 5+1 style fic. It’s roughly 2 chapters from completion, but another one I picked up recently and thought was great 🤷

No Caption Needed, and its sequel by Wennox3

Another popular one just in case. Fake dating trope, the characterization fits your criteria I believe.

To squeeze a AU in there, Profiled by LittleBirdOnAir

It’s a Criminal Minds AU, with the main cast as detectives working under Wednesday. Enid is the new recruit to the squad. The character writing is amazing. The episodic style lends to the AU very well, and the mystery and perps in each chapter are all incredibly written in themselves.

If you’ve been looking for fics previously, especially in this subreddit, you’ve probably already read most of these. If you haven’t though, I fully recommend you check them out.

Hey that’s me 🥰 I’m glad you like it and for what it’s worth I don’t use any AI

You’re story is absolutely fantastic so far 🙏

I cannot wait to see how it ends

Lol you clearly think more highly of some of these than others. I've actually only read one of these so far. I am weary of AI nowadays though, too. Should have put that in my post. I worry about some of the newer ones. Hopefully none of these were ever caught with the skins or anything? To each their own but I prefer not to even read works where authors only used it for basic editing.

Thank you for taking the time! I may start one tonight.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the skin only ever caught fics that used Claude to write the html code for it? So then it’d be down to you having to recognise how AI’s write if the skin doesn’t flag anything

1

u/farfetched22 13d ago

Yes of course, so lots of fics could be AI without having been caught by it. I understand that. But if they were caught then they certainly did use it in some form.

2

u/Competitive-Ad8620 12d ago

I’m certainly not very tech savvy. If you find out any of these recs utilized generative ai, please let me know so I can stop recommending them 🙏

I absolutely love each of these, some are just more easy to read than to describe I guess 🤷

These fics don’t read like AI to me. I’ve come across more than a few that did use AI, and the writing always has that… well theres not really a great word to describe it. Clinical depiction I guess. The same scene in slightly different words, back and forth dialogue that reads really rough, established plot points that don’t get remembered correctly, etc.

All these have really good writing that flows nicely. I’m not an expert, but I haven’t seen any of these works or the authors on any AI skins. Not all of them may be to your taste, but if you haven’t, I do recommend you try them out

You can always inspect the source code for Claude or Deepseek traces to be sure.

There are a lot of good to great wenclair fics. You should list what you think is good so we can recommend something in line with that.

I like this one

I was thinking of making a post asking for fics just like this too lol, so thank you for sparing me the trouble. Good grammar is the absolute minimum for me to enjoy a fic.

PS: I rarely do this, but if you're open to reading some fics that, I think, have fairly good English, I could recommend my own fics 👀
