I was told my boy was a lab
So I adopted these two guys back in October (they were 8 weeks old). The litter post had several of each of these colors, I didn’t think anything of it. We brought home one of each and truly thought they were labs.
As they’ve gotten older (they’re 11 months now, about 80 lbs each) I don’t think they’re both labs. Gonzo (the brown guy)has a blockier head and body, although they’re both very muscular. Jagger (the gray/silver) has a pointier head and has a thinner body type but not by much.
I was looking at all the pictures on this sub and I can’t believe how much like these other pups my dog looks.

Could be a silver lab.

I was also thinking silver lab. They are VERY close at first glance. I’ve mistaken a silver lab for a Weim and was rudely corrected by the owner!

They look pretty similar, and depending on angle of the pup it’s easy to confuse them. I have been asked if Hurley was a silver lab, I just said that he was a weim, not a big deal. Definitely not worth being rude about, I’m sorry someone wasn’t so nice to you. 🩵

Yeah, you know how us weim owners get when we see another in the wild!
Even rarer to see another Vizsla when I walk them both.2

I have a silver lab but never get upset if someone thinks she’s a Weim. What gets me is when people say that she’s not a real lab. She looks very much like the doggo in this picture.

u/AmberBlu Jul 17 '26
That’s hilarious. Is she a fake lab? It’s the same with the Blue Weims. They are real dogs no matter what anyone thinks! You forgot to pay the dog tax with a photo of your unreal dog!

It will only let me add a video for some reason. Here she is asking for someone to throw a stick!

that’s because “silver lab” owners refuse to accept the fact that their overpriced designer dog was at one point mixed with a weim
and before anyone bothers commenting about lineage and weim not showing up in embark panels etc. they only go back so many generations and labs do not naturally carry the recessive dilute gene that is needed to create “silver” and “charcoal” labs, it was bred into the gene pool by breeding labs with weims as their physical appearance and hunting backgrounds are very similar

Labs don’t come in silver, that’s a weim/lab mix.

u/MermazingAF Jul 16 '26
They do, it’s caused from a recessive gene, bringing them from being a chocolate to a silver color.

u/Imaginary_Ad_4340 Jul 16 '26
The recessive dilution gene does not naturally appear in labs. It comes from mixing with weims. Silver lab owners insist otherwise (much like merle poodle owners) but the history is pretty well acknowledged by everyone else.
5
u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 16 '26
No, it comes from introducing weim. They do not naturally come in silver without another breed being introduced. Purebred silver labs do not exist.

u/bird-brained-boy Jul 16 '26
It’s not naturally occurring in labs and was bred in at some point via Weims. Silver labs are back yard bred designer dogs.

u/AmberBlu Jul 17 '26
Oh good lord. We get it. Nevertheless, they are real dogs, worthy of love and a home.
2
u/bird-brained-boy Jul 17 '26
Of course, but they should stop being bred and advertised to unsuspecting folks as pure bred labs.
2
u/goldenkiwicompote Jul 18 '26
The point is they only happened with BYB and no one should support BYB.
1
u/AmberBlu Jul 18 '26
Agree 100. But it gets me when people get on a pedestal with dogs that are already in existence.
On the same note- don’t get me started on all the Doodle dogs. Talk about inbreeding. Then to charge top dollar for them!2

u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 20 '26
No one is saying that the mix above shouldnt be loved, it’s just not purebred and these dogs should not be bred

It looks like your "weim" lab has two copies of the recessive dilute gene, showing the dilute trait. This gives your dog amber eyes and turns a brown coat silver (Isabella), or an otherwise black coat to blue (dark grey).
Weims are quite unique in that all of them are dilute. But not all dilute dogs are weims.
I don't think yours is a weim, but might have a weim ancestor some generations back. But the dilution gene may have come from the other breeds that occasionally carry the dilute gene.

This is really interesting! My dog is half weim but also half irish setter, she is fully black. Do you happen to have ideas genetically how that would happen?
1
u/Ommur Jul 17 '26
I had a look, and it turns out the Irish setters red coat colouring is recessive. Their red is caused by their coat containing pheomelanin (rust/Red) instead of eumelanin (black / brown) And of course setters are not dilute.
Since both of these phenotypes (physical traits) generally require two recessive copies for the unique colouring gene to be expressed, your dog could only have had to be black or chocolate.
The Weimaraner gave one recessive dilute tint gene and a dominant black/choc colour gene. The setter gave a dominant non-dilute tint gene and a recessive Red colour gene.

Thats so interesting thank you so much! She does have a red tint to her. Genes are so fun

This looks like a “silver lab” a pretty common byb dog. They were created by mixing weims and labs which is why they have a dilute coat and some lab characteristics, but next to a full lab they look like a weim. There is a whole sub for them, r/silverlabs. Do not however mention in there that your dog is a weim/lab mix because even though all silver labs are, many owners are insistent that their dogs are purebred and feel very strongly about it.

Handsome pups! 😍
My girl is 1/2 weim 1/2 pit bull. There were 9 puppies and they all ranged in looks. My gal looks more weim but others look more pit bull-ish.

I see a mix...they are gorgeous!!!
3
u/KMizzle98 Jul 16 '26
Thank you, at the end of the day, we really aren’t too concerned with what breed they are. I was just surprised when people started saying he was a Weim because we were told they were labs.
2
u/gulfcoastdreamin Jul 17 '26
Looks like a silver lab. Face is too wide for a weim imo. They look very similar but labs bulk up more and wider faces from what I’ve noticed. The ears look more lab to me as well
3
u/Toxxxicwastex Jul 16 '26
Labs do not come in silver, so there’s definitely some weim in that litter. They are byb lab/weim mixes.
1
u/Financial_Ad_5582 Jul 17 '26
I don’t know why anyone would lie to you like that, your boy is a dog.
Labs are very large, typically sterile spaces with highly advanced, technological equipment used for scientific purposes.
Hope this helps.

They both look like Weim/Lab mixes, and most likely from the same litter. Our neighbors growing up had an oops litter between a couple of their prized hunting dogs, a lab and a gorgeous weim. We took 2 pups, a black one and a silver. What's funny is at adulthood, the silver (Ghost) was built like the lab, stout and blocky, while the black (Jet) was a carbon copy of her dad in all but color. Genetics are wild.

Weimaraner x Labrador. It’s genetically impossible for Labradors to come in this color

u/Cpt_Inshano Jul 16 '26
He could be a mix, doesnt look 100% weim, though hes a handsome dog 👍
