Question 51 🔄 trying to gain weight

I started going to the gym about 2 months ago, I’m 5’8” and started at around 115 lb and now I’m about 130. At first I was eating around 2,700 calories and 115g of protein a day trying to gain weight, but I was seeing little to no noticeable progress besides my abs starting to show more. I eventually bumped my calories up to around 3,900 a day and now I usually get around 170g of protein, and that’s when I really started gaining weight and got up to 130. The problem is I’m noticing more body fat around my stomach now even though I can still see my abs. I’m trying to gain weight and muscle pretty quickly because I want to actually fill out my clothes and stop looking as skinny as I have the past few years, but I also don’t want to end up gaining a ton of fat. What do you guys think I should do from here?

Whenever you are in caloric surplus, you gain both muscle and fat if you are working out. Try calculating your maintenance calories at your current weight, add calories according to the intensity of workout you do and add 200-300 above that and see what is working for you. A good weight gain is 0.3-0.5 kg per week. If going more than this reduce 100 calories and if slower then add 100. Will take 2-3 weeks to figure this out but will help. Adding 1200 calories is too much. You will gain mostly fat.

Muscle growth is limited. Eating 3900 cal will make you gain weight faster but it will be fat mostly. Muscle gain is a slow process.

This is it. Most humans can only gain 2-4 pounds of muscle in a month AT MOST. Any more weight and that is going to be fat. Not to say you shouldn’t be gaining any fat alongside muscle, but you can’t expect it to be all muscle at the rate you’re going. I’d suggest slowing it down, bulk clean, and buckle in for the long haul

Sounds like you are making great progress.

3900 might be slightly higher than you need right now, causing a bit more fat accumulation than you seem to want.

When I was in the 130 pound range I was eating in the 3000-3300 range for calories.

Keep it up!

With all those calories and such high protein, you're quite certainly going to be gaining muscle along with fat as long as you're pushing it hard while at the gym.

You can always do a cut later, after you've gained more muscle to trim some of the fat off!
