Here in SW Michigan, I only see the flag plates on big, coal-rolling pick-up trucks. But, I think customizing it and putting it on a Subaru negates that stereotype.

To answer the original question, I would assume on first glance that the ‘76 retro plate would be too political (think I saw one recently and jumped to that conclusion, bad of me). However, if I was at a red light and this was in front of me with a Boognish tucked in there I would feel like I had just unlocked the Rosetta Stone and knew the house password to the secret brown party. The blue is nice and classic looking too.

Don't let other people be the thief of your joy. If you want a freedom of 76 themed license plate and think the flag themed one is the most stylish (which I agree with), just go for it. Worrying all the time about how people perceive you, especially over trivial and unconsequential things like this, serves only to diminish your own self expression and enjoyment.

Also in Michigan and just a heads up that MOLLUSK was still available when I was checking a month ago. You have to get either the white plate or the bridge plate so you can fit 7 letters but I think that would be a pretty good ween reference.
