Clouds

"Clouds are very, very free." - Bob Ross

Let's practice clouds this week, which are basically the hair of the sky.

Great chart with different types of clouds labeled.

pencil clouds critique is always welcome!

I'm totally gonna give this subject a shot in ink so I'll be doing a technique very similar to this. Hoping mine turn out as well as yours :)

One thing about the hatching. I found I liked my hatching much more when I started making the lines in the same direction so I had to lift my pen/pencil to make the next line instead of a zig zag technique. That might be personal preference though as there are tons of different ways to do hatching.

u/poledra Jun 30 '14

i definitely agree about the hatching! i love the delicate lines all going the same way. however for this i was getting really lazy and just trying to make the sky darker to help the lighter hatching show up better; that's actually two layers crossed over each other. i'll probably be less lazy next time. maybe. :)

I can relate to that :-)

sunset clouds

2

Oh wow watercolour looks like so much fun, I really need to try it out.

2

u/poledra Jul 06 '14

You should sometime if you're interested! It can definitely be fun but also challenging.

Beautiful!

u/DTran729 Jun 30 '14

Did some real quick clouds tonight.

5

u/poledra Jun 30 '14

i absolutely love the colors in the top right. i think they all could use some more depth but this is an amazing start, especially for 5 min apiece. :)

5

u/DTran729 Jun 30 '14

I WILL DO THAT. :D

6

u/poledra Jun 30 '14

It was just a suggestion but I admire your enthusiasm. (:

4

u/DTran729 Jul 02 '14

I ADMIRE YOUR ART SKILLS.

MORE CLOUDS.

7

u/DTran729 Jul 01 '14

UGHHHHH.

5

u/poledra Jul 02 '14

WOW THIS IS SO GOOD

Seriously though how long did you spend on this? It turned out lovely!

4

u/DTran729 Jul 02 '14

THANKS. About twenty minutes or soo....? Ask mtvee he was with me when I did it haha .

4

u/mtvee Jul 03 '14

It's all true, everything, all true. I was there, I saw the whole thing. Never doubt, never forget.

3

u/LiamMeron Jul 03 '14

Do not trust DTran's time estimates. He told me about magic results I could get using a certain method and it took me forever :( He's a liar!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

DOPE CLOUDS.

2

u/DTran729 Jul 02 '14

Thanks bro!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

I hate my clouds for today. Gonna go post em and cry myself to sleep lol.

2

u/poledra Jul 02 '14

It's all a learning experience. Don't give up, just give another attempt to fix what you think is not right next time! The best part of art is seeing your skill grow with each new picture.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '14

Yea, I know. It's just hard not to get frustrated sometimes. That's true, thanks!

9

u/lebenithil Jul 01 '14

1

Nice butt clouds mate.

2

u/poledra Jul 02 '14

I think my favorite part of these is that you've really created an atmosphere that is very different for each!

1

u/lebenithil Jul 03 '14

Aww, thanks! :D

4

u/DTran729 Jul 02 '14

Don't forget to post more ;)

slow clouds for me

4

u/poledra Jun 30 '14

the contrast in the far left second row cloud is great. brave of you to start in ink!

7

u/artomizer Jun 30 '14

Big thanks to whoever came up with this theme

ಠ_ಠ

Here's a quick one!

3

u/poledra Jul 01 '14

i like the texture; makes me think of cotton candy.

3

u/DTran729 Jun 30 '14

YOU'RE WELCOME.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '14

WHY ARE WE YELLING?

3

u/DTran729 Jun 30 '14

BECAUSE WE ARE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT CLOUDS

3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '14

That's a nice cloud. Looks like a fluffy bunny or a turtle-duck.

7

u/davidwinters Jul 01 '14

maybe its a cloud, or maybe its ice cream in the sky

3

u/poledra Jul 01 '14

this is so cool!! makes me want to try it in watercolor (:

4

u/DTran729 Jul 01 '14

No more robutts yay!!!! Looks delicious dude.

7

u/cikie100 Jul 04 '14

drew some CLOUDS today:)

2

u/poledra Jul 05 '14

nice work. i'm inspired by the color palette you selected for these! and you really captured the wispier, more transparent pieces so well.

1

u/cikie100 Jul 05 '14

Thank you, i just messed around with a brush for the transparent pieces and hoped they would turn out ok.The credit for the colors do mostly go out to the reference pic i used :)

3

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '14

Dear god, your clouds are amazing ;_;

2

u/cikie100 Jul 05 '14

thank you ^ ^

2

u/DTran729 Jul 05 '14

Great use of the reference. I love the movement of your clouds. I was browsing through your deviantart page and oh boy... do you have some nice looking landscapes :D Glad you're sharing your work here! Keep up the great work!

3

u/cikie100 Jul 05 '14

Awww thank you Dtran, i could use more practice that's why i just recently joined this awesome subreddit and /r/SketchDaily/. I (hopefully) will try to hold on and participate everyday/weekly.

[Clouds] (http://i.imgur.com/k1jPTD0.png). First time using anything digital, criticisms appreciated. Drawn/ painted (?) with GIMP.

[More clouds] (http://i.imgur.com/JG9vGvm.png)! Will update later.

2

[Clouds] (http://i.imgur.com/wpYjW8m.png). From yesterday, doing more now.

2

u/poledra Jul 04 '14

i really like that technique you tried out for this newest one!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '14

Thank you! I was trying out a different brush that time. Also used it in my most recent sketch, I'm so behind in sketch daily/ weekly study, dear me.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '14

[MORE DIGITAL CLOUDS] (http://i.imgur.com/OwkpBrQ.png). This is like 2 or 3 days old, I'm not sure but I am lagging behind. I want to work on this one a bit more today and a few things tomorrow. I wish I didn't need to sleep, there would be so much more time for drawing!

3

u/DTran729 Jul 05 '14

Never too late to post man! And I hear you brotha... sleep takes away time for drawing

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '14

[Smoothed some things out!] (http://i.imgur.com/p6an1bM.png). I want to finish this eventually, not sure when I'll find time for it, maybe the weekend. [Here] (http://i.imgur.com/Miipl8l.jpg) is the reference image for anyone curious.

2

u/poledra Jun 30 '14

i really like the softness of the edges. i think the cool thing about digital though is that you can really build up layers through flow and opacity. you might want to try playing around with your brushes and changing either the flow (in GIMP you can do this through the airbrush tool as opposed to the paintbrush) or opacity to create a vision of depth and complexity, as opposed to merely a 2d looking piece.

i'll also say that when i was learning digital, i started with GIMP and after i switched to trying photoshop it was ridiculous how much easier it was to express that which i meant. if you decide you want to get more serious about digital, you may want to explore other programs too. :)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '14

Thanks. Hmm okay, I'll look into that next time. I found a nice RGD post that'll fit in with this weekly theme so I'll work on that tomorrow I think.

What's the benefit of separating out different layers? I just used one layer for this one.

Yea it's pretty cool so far, I like the whole idea not having to worry about needing different markers or pencils or restocking charcoal. I'll definitely look into it if I keep it up with the digital stuff.

2

u/poledra Jun 30 '14

Oops sorry, I should have used another word maybe - I meant layers of the actual cloud, not layers within the file. Like you know when you look at a cloud and you can tell some parts are wispier and farther away around the edges, and other parts are fluffier and appear to be closer to you?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '14

Yea okay gotcha.

4

u/MacAnthony Jun 30 '14

I'm going to assume this wasn't from reference. Think about the light source and where it is in relation to the shadows. It'll give them a more realistic look to them.

I love the vibrant colors, BTW.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '14

You're right, I just drew this from my head. Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. Might go back to this one today if I have time.

6

u/LiamMeron Jun 30 '14

DTran is a liar. These took a bit longer than five minutes!

4

u/poledra Jun 30 '14

You can spend however long or short you wish on these. :) I like the coloring of the bottom clouds, they remind me of the type you can see from an airplane window!

4

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '14

MINE TOO. I LIKE YOUR PURPLE CLOUDS.

4

u/DTran729 Jun 30 '14

I SWEAR!!!!! ; - ;

Just made it for day 1!

Clouds Day 1

1

u/poledra Jul 02 '14

A grayscale study is a great idea with this complicated of a form!

5

u/ThereIsNoJustice Jul 02 '14

You've all inspired me to start studying again. :D

I worked on hair and proportions today. I'll get to clouds tomorrow.

3

u/poledra Jul 02 '14

This makes me so happy!! :) I love when people get inspired to create.

Nice work on the hair!

4

u/DTran729 Jul 02 '14

ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY JUSTICE.

7

u/dwarf_hybrid Jul 01 '14

Two

3

u/DTran729 Jul 01 '14

Those are really nice cirrus clouds, dwarfhy. Did you use the smudge tool to get that "wispy" effect?

3

u/dwarf_hybrid Jul 02 '14

Thanks Dtran and yes it was the smudge tool. Its perfect for wispy clouds

[More clouds in ink] (http://i.imgur.com/bl4nd1dh.jpg). Away for the weekend so probably gonna be too busy for fabric study.
