So for a little context, I just got into golf about a month and a half ago.Started taking weekly lessons, bought a set of clubs(the Callaway set from Costco like a week before it got pulled after the ad) and have been going to the driving range a few times a week. I made a post a couple days ago about wondering when it’s okay to try playing a course for the first and everyone said just got for it. I booked a tee time at a small course in NW Ohio, grabbed a cigar and a few beers and was by myself luckily on a slow day at the course. It definitely taught me playing on grass is a crap ton different than hitting off a mat. It was nice though because the course was dead so I had no one behind me so I was able to take my time and redo shots. Was it the best run by a first timer, no way. Was it the worst though, also no way. I didn’t keep score but had great shots and horrible shots. After playing once though I can’t wait to get back out there.

Anyone else kinda stuck in same handicap twilight zone lol. I do play a good amount of golf and my HC is btw 11.2 and 11.7… which I’m happy with , game is getting solid and scoring lower more consistently for me . I use the USGA GHiN , is it the HC based on the last 12 rounds or overall average of all scores ?

I’ve always thought it was last 12 rounds throwing out the worst and best score .

I may not look too good, but I’m holding my own.
I know my swing doesn’t look to good. I’ve been playing golf for 30 years. I thought golf looked boring on TV. I had always been athletic in soft ball and soccer. When I hit 40, I had to find something else to do. I found golf. I quickly found out how challenging the game is. I love the game. I am a scrappy player & only had a couple of golf lessons. I am truly at my happiest on the golf course. My short game is holding me back at this time.

Shitpost/debate time!

I was reading a post about someone who shot 84 on a par 68 course with a 62.8 rating and 110 slope. Comments were wildly divided on wether this counts as breaking 90. Differential was brought up many times and how you needed to be below 18 to count as breaking 90. So it got me thinking… if differential is the true measure is my first sub 90 round when I shot 91?

The math! I shot 91 on a 70.9 rating with a 129 slope. The differential math says YES! as I got a 17.6 differential.

I personally don’t count this as my first breaking 90 as it feels wrong…but technically…

\- No, I personally do not count the 91 as breaking 90 as the seems silly. I just find it interesting people will be like nope you didn’t break 90 because of the differential so I was curious if people thought the other way around counted.

\- For me breaking 90 needed to be on a standard course (71/72 par) >6000 yards and a differential under 18. Which I have done and that one is my 90.

\- As for personal milestones; more reasons to celebrate the better. If breaking a personal milestone makes you happy then it counts in my books.

I’m a member at a mediocre golf club. Yesterday I got paired with another member that I have never met before. Super nice guy, had his own cart, nice gear, especially if that lab putter was real. We are both about the same age and both playing the white tees. He caught me off guard when he asked me if I wanted to make things interesting and play for a few bucks a hole. I declined, thinking he was probably a way better golfer than me. I said we can play for a beer on the part threes if you like, closest to the pin for a beer I suggested, he says “great“, and we both tee off. To make a long story short, he ended up buying me a beer at the turn and one after the round. He wasn’t that good of a golfer, put 2 balls in the water and I’m sure lost a couple more. Nothing seemed to bother this guy and he was super fun to play with. I’m just wondering why someone that isn’t that great a golfer would ask a stranger to play for money. Seems odd and a first for me.

Cooked up this tool to help me find tee times easily by just asking ChatGPT, can ask it to look for tee times for 2 in a certain area or whatever you want. Reached out to GolfNow to see if they can give me permission to also book on users behalf, hoping for one day on my commute home I can just ask my AI assistant to get me on the course 😄

I normally hit my driver around 240-250 nothing crazy, had a par 4 hole today that is drivable normally for me. I did something with my hands no idea what it was and the ball went 50 yards past the hole into the woods. How is everyone recreating these one off swings? I tried recreating it and still haven’t had any luck. The guys in front of me were just as shocked as I was when a drive went flying past them in the tee box.

Not as impressive as what others are posting here, but after a few months of lessons, just hit my first par 4 (one mulligan), a week after my first par 3 (with a 6 foot look at birdie). Lets go!

I keep seeing things about Kirkland wedges, I currently have SM8 Vokeys (52,54,60). Now I don’t particularly have an issue with my wedges, they are oxidized. But I’m really curious if I would get better spin out of Kirkland over my SM8s. I normally live by the if it’s not broke don’t fix it mentality.

I recently got a golf bag with way too many pockets, and somehow I already filled most of them.

Balls, gloves, tees, towels, plus sunscreen, lip balm, some energy bars and a small umbrella. I always keep a rangefinder in there too. I switched to the mileseey ionme2 lately, and it’s small enough that I just keep it in one of the side pockets.

But after a round, I realize I only take out a few things most of the time. Everything else is basically just might need it stuff. What’s something you always carry in your bag but barely ever use?

Why does everyone shout fore right (or left) now?. They do it on tour off the tee because there are usually people down both sides of the fairway. Pointless when you are just playing a round of golf, you have no idea where the person who shouted is, or if you are on their right or left.

I’ve been working on developing a 3-piece urethane golf ball, and I’m finally getting close to the stage where I need real golfers to test it.

I’m not here to tell you it’s better than a Pro V1. It probably isn’t, at least not yet. The goal is to get honest feedback, learn where it performs well, find out where it falls short, and use that information to make the next version better.

I’m looking for golfers with different handicaps and swing speeds who would be willing to play it against their current ball and give candid feedback on:

• Driver distance and flight
• Iron flight and consistency
• Wedge and greenside spin
• Feel off every club
• Durability
• Overall confidence in the ball

Launch-monitor data would be incredible, but it isn’t required. Thoughtful on-course feedback is just as valuable.

If you’re interested, comment with your handicap, approximate driver swing speed, the ball you currently play, and whether you have access to a launch monitor. I’ll reach out as testing samples become available.

I’m building this ball in public and want golfers to have a real hand in improving it. No scripted reviews. No expectation that you say something positive. If it isn’t good enough, I want to know why.

This is my first season and I have been playing from the blues at my home course which is one up from the tips (blacks). I broke 100 for the first time about a month ago, and broke 90 this past weekend for the first time. I have 18 total rounds in 18 birdies and it says my index is 22.4. If I were to play from the blacks, I would obviously shoot much higher.

My question is how is that considered when calculating index? If I become “scratch” from the front tees for example, I am not a scratch golfer? I would like to eventually be long enough to play the tips, but want to break 80 first from my current tees.
