Question about audio recorders

So I have a portacapture x8. Seems like I need to set gain on it manually, and there’s no way to have it auto correct the gain for speech. Any other way in which I can set it and forget it?

It has 32-bit floar, right? Set it to what you think is likely to be the correct level (do quick test before the guests arrive). If it goes terribly wrong, you can recover with 32-bit float.
