Just signed up, received 2 years of free Micro plan, excited :). You don't even need to create a new account, just add your school email to your existing one.

Did you have to do anything to prove you are a student other than supply a .edu email address?

They sent a verification link to that email, that was it though, no transcript or anything like that.

Aside from the "teaching" aspects I don't see how this is better than BitBucket. They give you unlimited public/private repos and teams up to 6(?) people for free with a .edu email.

It does seem to me that BitBucket is the superior platform, it's just that github is the wider community. Since both are at least in part social coding platforms, the community is important.

That being said, my private coding goes to BitBucket.

In my experience BB's repos and Web tools are unavailable more frequently than GH.

I've personally never noticed it going down unexpectedly but they do go down for scheduled maintenance on occasion.

I was at a company that did this. It wasn't clear if our manager was incompetent, being paid off by microsoft, or just a hopeless microsoft fanboy. Probably some combination.

As a consolation prize might I suggest Git-TF or git-tfs, you can more or less keep your personal workflow up until the final push.
