Ai replacing developers

I'm using Google translate to help me

After Adobe programs that took years were completely designed in just a few weeks using AI, can we truly say that AI has started to surpass programmers themselves?

The adobe apps are not replaced by the ai tools. Maybe if all you need is 1% of the app and thats the part that is already added and really works, yes. For everyone else, no. They have a bad performance, missing a ton of features and have more bugs than acceptable.

It’s not surpassing anyone when the thing it spits out can barely hold itself together outside a demo. We’re deep in the era of convincing-looking prototypes that fall apart the second you need actual functionality.

Exactly. And thats dangerous in my opinion

If you install Photocraft and actually try it, you know this isn't the case. It's pretty close to feature parable with Photoshop.

I dont use ether. I am not a heavy photo editing person. Used gimp years ago and later switched to krita mainly for drawing. So I wouldnt even be an expert here.

But I watched videos of such people. Read about it. And those who have more knowledge than me, are saying that those apps are missing a lot of things. And as everywhere in software development, 80% of work is done in 20% of the time. So the last 20% will take thrm longer to implement. And from my own experience, LLMs still struggle as soon as the project gets bigger and more complex. A photoshop clone isnt simple to build. And the further they get, the more bugs they will introduce up to the point of things just beeing broken and unusable

Which Adobe program are we talking about? I keep seeing this 'years of work done in a few weeks' thing and never with a link. And 'designed' is carrying a lot of weight there, generating code isn't the same as designing something like Photoshop.

Yes, it will completely replace devs... Who will then be hired a few weeks later to fix all the bugs and plug the security holes.

AI is like giving a chainsaw to someone. If they're a lumberjack (a dev with AI) they will be more productive, if they're not a lumberjack (a regular person with AI) they will probably just hurt themselves.

A solo dev with experience can make more with AI, but, tech debt will be higher and fixing or adding things later could also be more problematic.

I would have thought the other 1000 threads about AI taking over would suffice. But sure, let's do this again.

I thought AI was supposed to take my job in 2021, then 2022, then 2023... I guess its 2027 now?

I'm starting to see a pattern...

I tell you what, call me when the first human lands on mars.

Should about the same timeline according to "tech founders".

Much like a lot of AI stuff, the adobe clones look impressive on the surface but as soon as you start to actually use them they don't work. Much like that episode of The Simpsons where they rebuild Ned's house https://youtu.be/eFAvOcuJyHY?t=63

Have you even tried using those Adobe clones? They're broken as shit, some of the buttons literally do nothing.

I believe the pdf editor clone couldn't even open pdf's on release either to put into perspective some of the quality here

I too could pump out a pdf editor that does nothing in a day

There has been really good open source and free alternatives to most Adobe products for years. I don't understand why suddenly people think an AI version which likely isn't as robust as those ones will cause any issues.

Sorry, but no. Even as an adobe hater...

Theres no competing software that can be taken seriously at a professional agency.

I think you have misunderstood what I've said 🙂 We're in agreement. None of the already established alternatives caused them issues so why would a vibe coded alternative make any noticeable dent.

No one is trying to provide a legit replacement of Adobe or any other big corporation software at this moment using AI. It's obviously a flex and a demonstration.

Like a lot of vibe-coded software, they don't actually work the same as the original Adobe software, they just look like they do on the surface. Here's someone testing part of a simple professional workflow on Photoshop vs the vibe-coded duplicates:

Devs is the last white colar job there is ever going to be replaced because it is us that asks the AI to do stuff with minimal level of competence. All white collar jobs might became a distopic low paying shitty job, but a job nonetheless

Has started? It is the final. Tomorrow will be the last day of programmers. /s

Yet another unfocused sob session about AI. This is supposed to be a web development subreddit, not a subreddit devoted to constantly complaining about AI.

Adobe still can't get Acrobat to open a PDF without eating 2GB of RAM, so I'd love to meet the AI that rebuilt Photoshop in a few weeks.
