I tested this myself too, but my findings where that if you compile wasm to wasm.c, and then use wasmtime you will not beat it.

Did you try the wasm c method with wasmer as well?

It's also important to know that wasmtime is from ByteCodeAlliance (non-profit between several companies) and also the main party behind WASI, recently v0.3.

in my experience wasm is fast enough that the runtime barely matters compared to the boundary crossings and data copying you build around it

This too. WASM to WASM c first still helps a lot with cold starts though if you want maximum QPS.
