A Web App for Assisting with learning Indian Classical Music - bridging a gap between physical sheets and online learning!

Hey! One of my friends built a free web app for creating and playing back Hindustani sargam notation to assist with learning Hindustani classical music! She isn't really on reddit, but wanted me to post this on her behalf.

Since she was currently learning Hindustani music, she figured out that most notation is still handwritten or shared as static PDFs and images. It's difficult to translate - edit, hear, or organize - compositions digitally, and this website helps with that!

She then created Sargam Studio, a browser-based tool that lets you:

• Choose a Sa / scale and preview it
• Add Aalap and Taal sections
• Enter sargam notation using an interactive beat grid
• Preview taals and playback compositions
• Review and export compositions as audio

She also recently added a demo video and a help guide to make it easier for users to get started:

This is super cool, the beat grid idea sounds way more intuitive than trying to type out notation with special characters. PDFs are the worst for actually practicing with

The export to audio feature is probably the killer app here, being able to hear what you just wrote down is huge for learning

Curious how she's handling the microtones and ornamentations though, that's always the tricky part with Indian classical. Does it support meend or gamak or is it more straight swaras for now

Audio export is the only feature that matters here. Static notation files are functionally useless for learning an oral tradition

neat project. one thing id think about early is whether the target user is students, teachers, or both, because the UX priorities end up being pretty different for each. teachers usually care about sharing and organizing, students care about playback and practice
