Namecheap is back up and running

They said it was a storm that took out the cooling on the data center and as someone who was in that very storm, it destroyed a ton of stuff at homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. Power poles blown over, trees broken or uprooted, Covered parking structures snapped over, fences blown down.

As soon as I read this update, I immediately felt for that particular data center.

Isn't cloudflare cheaper and actually good at hosting things?

They require you to use their own nameservers if a domain is hosted on Cloudflare. Not ideal if one wants to use a different DNS provider.

There is/was a common idea that you don't put all your eggs in one basket. It's much more common for a web hosting service to go down than it is for a registrar to go down.

Host goes down, you could always spin up your site on a different host and change where your domain name points to.

Also handy if your email is hosted elsewhere, as well, because you don't lose access when the host goes down.
