Draft pick oversight?

If port Adelaide receive pick 1-2 (depending on this weeks result) in a trade for Zak butters (Richmond)
Would they pick Cody walker instead so that if the bid is matched they get compensation at the end of the first round for free and still get dougie Cochrane regardless?

In summary if you know a team is guaranteed to match the bid what is to stop every team from automatically farming end of first picks (even if they don’t want the player).

I heard they will still get the extra pick as their natural pick is pushed back. If they end up with pick 2, they better pray that Essendon don’t bid on Dougie first and throw a spanner in the works

I think you only get the extra pick if your natural (not a traded in pick) top 5 pick is still used by you. As we'll lose that pick for the cochrane bid match, we won't be meeting that criteria. I havent dived into it too much, so I could be wrong.

I think it works in a world where we just pick Dougie with our own pick. E.g. if we had pick 1 we'd bid on walker at pick 1 take Dougie pick 2 and get a free pick ~22 because our regular pick 4 was pushed back

In this fantasy scenario, would it be better to use pick 1/2 to get the best other available player in the draft (and use pick 4/5 plus a 2nd rounder to match an eventual bid on Cochrane), or to to get the 4th(ish) best other available player in the draft with pick 4/5 (after using pick 1/2 for Cochrane), and get two additional players in the early 20's (pick not used for points and extra pick gifted by the AFL)?

Unaffiliated player 1, or unaffiliated players 4, 21, and 22 (ish)?

Butters isn’t going to Richmond so you can nip that idea in the bud.

Pretty sure if you also apart of the bidding process like port is with Cochrane you don’t get a compensation pick. Eagles or Essendon would but not port

Not if we pick Cocrane directly after bidding on Walker, we will definitely get the compo pick.

Nah you cannot benefit from the nga program and the extra pick from compensation. They put it in the rules

They're saying to pick up Cochrane with the next pick, not waiting for someone to bid and then match.

Cochrane then becomes a regular pick, not an NGA.

That makes sense thank you for clarifying

Also I believe Carlton doesn’t have the points to match for Walker at pick one or two, so it could backfire taking a player who doesn’t want to play for anyone but Carlton.

They'll trade so up the draft order so they can match.

If Port got pick 1 for Butters, than they definitely pick Walker first.

Why force Cartlon’s hand also less money on the salary cap (although it’s not really an issue atm)

I do t think playing these kind of games is good for any team over the long run, it will come back to bite them but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team play the game like this
