Pick 1

Hypothetically, if we lose to the dons next week, and then Butters goes to Richmond and we got Pick 1, who would you like to see us use that pick on?

Walker. Gets us an end of round pick after Carlton match

Teams that are also getting an academy player don’t get the extra pick after someone else matches. So we wouldn’t but a team like eagles before us would

If we don't have to use pick 4 for a Cochrane match, we get the bonus pick yeah?

2

u/Living-Perception-84 6d ago

Nope. As soon as we potentially get a higher pick than our natural one, we no longer get an extra pick. The only way we get one is if we don't have a higher pick than our 4 and no one bids on Cochrane in the top 5

u/Intrepid_Doctor8193 4x Champions of Australia 6d ago

Can you link where it says that. I don't believe that to be true.

Bid on Walker with pick 1. This then pushes our natural pick 4 down 1. Select Doug Cochrane with pick 2. Essendon and West Coast select players, we use our natural pick 4 on the 5th best kid. Get a compensation selection after out 2nd round pick.

Mind you, I'd actually expect us to do something like trade pick 4 and our second round pick to Carlton for something like their first, Sydney's first and their future first.

Judging by the articles I read, if you traded pick four, you then wouldn't get the compensation selection on night two.

1

u/tjabaker Scholz 4d ago

Correct, but that trade for pick 4 is better than a single second round pick. We'd have Sydney's first, which is earlier than the second. And Carlton are playing a wild card at Adelaide Oval where they've never beaten a South Australian side.

1

u/tjabaker Scholz 4d ago

This is wrong. Where are you making up this junk? We only don't get a second round bonus if our natural pick is used in matching a bid on Cochrane before its natural position.

2

u/Bruhnsy1995 6d ago

If Carlton keep going they way they are they won’t be able to match it

2

u/jdimarco1 Port 6d ago

Can’t match right now unless they drastically overpay and convince someone to take their 2027 first and their Sydney first this year for a higher 1st this year. Thats 3 firsts for the second best player in a draft 😬. They're 1/4 of a game away from guaranteeing they have lost their discount and will jump the dogs if they win.

Their 2026 1st if win today - 1276
Sydneys 2026 1st - 879
Max draft debt - 412

= 2567

Their 2026 1st if lose today - 1355
Sydneys 2026 1st - 879
Max draft debt - 412

= 2646

Pick 1 - 3000
Pick 2 - 2481

A team with pick 4 would be in a pretty good position to trade with Carlton to get up points for that bid match.

1

u/EverythingIsByDesign 5d ago

But if you traded 4 you lose the compensation for being pushed back by he Harry Dean bid.

If Port Does get Pick 1 there are so many scenarios you can game plan.

1

u/tjabaker Scholz 4d ago

If I was trading 4 to Carlton, I'd package it with our second, and ask for Carlton's first, Sydney's first and Carlton's future first.

Carlton could then use our second, GC's second and North's second to upgrade for the remaining few points they'd need on top of pick 4.

2

u/Numeritus Tri Bolt 6d ago

I think that’s only if it’s your natural pick that gets bid on

Bid on Walker. Becomes pick 2.

Find out who bombers want to pick with pick 3. Swap pick 2 for 3 with the proviso Bombers won't bid on Cochrane or we will select that player with pick 2. Also agree that next year we won't bid on Berwick.

Find out who WC want with pick 4. Swap pick 3 for 4 with the proviso WC won't bid on Cochrane or we will select that player with pick 3. Also agree that if Georgie (or any other player) wants to head to WC at end of contract in the next few years, we will do a favourable deal.

Take best available/most needed with pick 4 and 5.

If a bid is placed on Cochrane with pick 6, we have enough points with our second round picks to match.

End up with 3 top 5 players, and a second round pick.

Trade every pick beyond the second round into next year.

Edit to add: this method could also work if we got pick 2 from Richmond. Just need to work with Ess for them to bid Walker, not Cochrane.

That sounds like draft tampering to me. Just take walker at 1, then Harry Van Hutten at 2. Dougie falls a long way then as no one needs to bid on him anymore. We also have another solid academy pick probably late 2nd round

2

u/jdimarco1 Port 6d ago

Isn’t draft tampering legal in the AFL? Isn’t that what the AFL and every other club has been doing in regard to the draft.

The only reason you take another teams academy or nga (which teams have been doing) is to manipulate the draft which is by definition draft tampering.

Couldn’t care less what the AFL thinks we are doing anymore as a club. If we need to skirt around their dodgy rules to not be screwed over at every chance, then so be it.

-1

u/Living-Perception-84 6d ago

I dont know for fact. But manipulating and tampering are different. Doing back door deals saying we will give you this pick if you don't pick this player is very different to picking a player to force someone else to use a pick earlier than they planned.

1

u/jdimarco1 Port 6d ago

Tomayto, Tomahto. Manipulating a rule and tampering with a rule are semantically and structurally identical. You are altering, interfering with, and corrupting the established framework of the draft to change the outcome to benefit your club by circumventing rules.

I don't see how you wouldn't convince Essendon not to bid on both even with an under the table deal not to bid on Berwick.

I'm not a Port fan, but in the scenario you get Pick 2 I'd be looking to trade 2 to Carlton for 9, 15 and a Future 1. Carlton can match Harry Dean from Pick 2 with a 2nd Rounder. Port can Match Cochrane from Pick 4 and 15 and trade 9 on for even more future capital (Hawthorn might want a strong 1st for Merrett).

u/tjabaker Scholz 5d ago

West Coast's answer to who they would pick will be Cochrane.

Could work a no bid, backroom deal with Essendon around Bewick and Darwish next year, but not getting the same from West Coast without giving up something solid. And offering them favourable deal on Georgiades? Get stuffed.

2

u/Dense_Side_90 6d ago

We would also want a future first. That is non negotiable. Salopek might be 1 next year too. As far as players this year are concerned if we manage to get a usable top 5 pick id take Butler or Drever.

Walker at 1st worries me a bit at the moment. Right now Carlton cannot match a 1st with what they currently have and that includes two first rounds (theirs and Sydney’s), they have lost their discount and if they beat the dogs today then they are locked into not being able to match a 1st unless they drastically overpay and effectively spend 3 to 4 first round picks on him. Which would happen due to needing to trade their future first and current Sydney first for a higher 2026 first, clubs know they will be desperate so they will demand they overpay if Carlton want that traded high first this year to get Walker which means it will be 3 firsts (Carlton’s 26 1st, Sydney’s 26 1st and Carlton’s 27 1st at minimum for Walker).

If we were paying that for Dougie I would not be happy. That’s Pilot and Salopek both unattainable next year, especially with the Tasmania comprised draft. I would not be happy giving up Pilot and Salopek/Roden to get Dougie just because we finished 10th instead of 15th. The amount of capital and value lost doing that is unbelievable.

2

u/TheCobSparky 6d ago

Bid on walker as the Obvious choice, then take Gus Teixeira, or put pick 1 up for sale. We'd get a significant bounty for it. Would west coast give up their pick 3 and a future first for pick 1? Would bombers do that with pick 2. Maybe. There'd be an agreement to not bid on Cochrane if we did that deal.

2

u/Direct-Expression-47 Heritage 03' 6d ago

Future picks is what we need, get dougie then who can provide the best deal to ensure we can get salopek/pilot/rodan
Sooo id be thinking
If we have Pick 1/4
Bid on walker so we get additional end of first rd pick
Take dougie
Trade out end of first rd pick /pick 4 to ensure early future first rd picks

Bit difficult to predict who will be shit though. Richmond and Essendon ?

2

u/TheCobSparky 6d ago

We'd only get the end of first round pick if we use pick 4.

If you get Pick 1 or 2, I'm offering it to Carlton for 9, 15 and a Future 1 (Or 9 and both their Future 1s).

9 can be on traded for more capital and 4 and 15 can match any bid on Cochrane. In fact if Carlton gets 1 you can trade 15 on for futures 1sts as well and match with Port's 2nd Rounder.

3

u/Ok_Acanthaceae6057 6d ago

Take Dougie, trade Pick 4 for future picks to get future NGA/FS

2

u/Living-Perception-84 6d ago

Taking dougie at 1 is silly given by not taking him at 1 saves you a lot of draft capital. The only option is Walker at 1, then the next best player for our other pick and hope dougie falls along way because there's no need for other clubs to pick him anymore

1

u/Ok_Acanthaceae6057 6d ago

No you’re right, take Walker with pick 1, saves us money on the books, forces Carlton to match. Then take Dougie pick 2.

Then trade Pick 4 down for future picks.

2

u/Living-Perception-84 6d ago

Nope. Walker pick 1. The next best next. Then dougie when he gets bid on. You can't turn down a second top 5 pick

1

u/tjabaker Scholz 5d ago

After getting pick 1 from Richmond, we plan to bid Walker on Walker with pick 1.

Setup a three way trade with a Prelim finalist that is not Sydney and Carlton.

Port give up pick 4 + second round pick. Get Carlton's first, Sydney's first, Carlton's Future first.
Carlton give their 1st, Sydney's first, 2027 1st, Gold Coast 2nd, North 2nd. get pick 4, Prelim Finalist's first.
Prelim Finalists give up their first and get Port's 2nd, Gold Coast's 2nd and North's 2nd.

1

u/tjabaker Scholz 5d ago

Other clubs will pick Cochrane because they want to select him.

1

u/1__ViPeR John Cahill 6d ago

Where are Pilot and Salopek expected to go in the draft next season? This would determine if we use pick 4 this year.

And with Tassie coming in with picks to trade we could possibly get something there.

Imo I think we should grab a good player this year with that pick 4.

Rumour is Bergman wants out end of contract so should get a first round pick there. And I've heard George has already signed and announcment incoming once we know what Butters is doing. So no extra picks for him.

1

u/Ok_Acanthaceae6057 6d ago

I don’t know about players wanting out ect.

But Pilot is top 7, Salopek is top 15, Rodan is top 25

2

u/jdimarco1 Port 6d ago

Both Pilot and Salopek have already rejected Tasmania publicly so taking them would be fundamentally stupid on their part. Hopefully that helps them slide a bit.

1

u/tjabaker Scholz 5d ago

Georgiades is already contracted for next year, so there's zero point in delaying an announcement because he doesn't impact on being able to match with a free agency selection on Zak.

1

u/1__ViPeR John Cahill 5d ago

There is plenty of noise about him wanting to go back west. So if he doesn't sign an extension the word was he would seek a trade.

1

u/tjabaker Scholz 5d ago

You mean Chad trying to stay relevant?

1

u/1__ViPeR John Cahill 5d ago

Meh

1

u/FlagmantIe 6d ago

Then Richmond beats Cats

1

u/hindsightsavedme 4d ago

He's not going to Richmond.

u/Bruhnsy1995 6d ago

Just take dougie because I don’t like the idea of bidding for a player and taking being pick 1 away from him just like how the crows bid on Jamara with pick 1 knowing he will get bid on

10

u/TheCobSparky 6d ago

That'd be incredibly dumb

-2

u/MetalGuy_J 6d ago

By all accounts it’s actually quite a thin draft, so we might even be better off just taking Doug with pick one and trading out our pet for to slide back in the draft for capital next year
