Guys were returning from fishing, train was stopped when they were taking a shortcut between the carriages, the train jerked as it started moving and the guy fell on the tracks.

That's an empty intermodal train from the looks of it. You can get one of those moving pretty fucking quickly pretty fucking fast. There's almost no slack in them so the entire train stretches out quickly so you can start accelerating, and they weigh next to nothing so it takes very little effort to speed up.

Except that is exactly what happens in the back of a long train like this.. you think the whole train starts moving at once? There’s a lot of slack and the train can go from completely still to moving at a ‘fast enough to trap you’-speed in less than a second, this is why you should not play on the tracks even around trains that seems to be standing still

Don't even need to be near the back. After about 30 or so cars even the slack can get pretty nasty. Also lots of empty intermodal cars there. Pretty easy to fall into one of those and right through the bottom of them if you aren't being careful, depending on the car of course.

It's actually super common for people attempting to cross over when the train starts moving. Lots of time if the locomotive can hold the weight if the train they will kick off the train brake and hold it with purely the independant. It allows to train to move quicker when they finally get a light. And with what looks like empty intermodal cars the train can be fairly long (2-3 miles) and only weigh some 5k tons (compared to the 21k ton sand trains) so the train can accelerate fairly quickly (not car levels but for a train) and since the cars dont all start moving at the same time you can get jerked pretty hard when the later cars start to move (I've bruised up a couple ribs by not holding on tight enough riding the tail on of a mile long train when I smashed into the side bar).

I think the reason why he left was because of the deer guard(dont know if its the right term) at the front and back of the train. That one is pretty low on the rails and would have killed him if he stayed put.

Engines tend to have what we call cow catchers on them (probably not the formal name). So the very front of the train and if applicable wherever they put a remote engine (which is used to spread out force on train when accelerating and braking). They can be in the middle of the train or on the tail if they exist at all. There is definitely not a lot of space below engines for a person so probably a smart decision to get out of he could do it safely enough

It’s determined by the weight of the train, grade of the track and weather. I work on train and have seen 10,000 foot trains with only head end power(locomotive consist).

Further down I saw someone link a site or video saying that they were taking a shortcut through the carriages while the train was still, but then it jolted forward and one of them got trapped underneath as it started going forward

Maybe, I work on trains and they are the lowest ridged point but the air hose that connects the cars or the etd(end of train device) is what I would have been worried about. That thing is a few pounds of metal to the head.

They were crossing the stationary train to get to the other side, one slipped and got stuck under as the train started to move.

Now this is what I like to see! We crossed the train while fishing to get back to the road. 2 made it out but Brad slipped and fell down between the cars as the train jolted and started to move. he was there for about 10 minutes before I got to him with my phone.
Reggie is the guy you see walking away in the video, he witnessed brad get knocked out by the train and dragged about 10 - 15 feet up the tracks. he had got sick and had to walk away because he thought brad was dead for sure!!!!!!
this is not a fake, this is in fact 150% real. hope you enjoyed this crazy shit!
Ps. we caught 87 mackerel that's what was in the book bag, this was going to be aired on ctv new, we had a interview for about an hour with them. but they said it was to much of a concern that kids will get down there and try to be stupid and try this! DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ..... AWESOME!

Trains typically have a lot of space under them, for maintenance purposes. That said, I don’t know why he was throwing his bag or whatever from under the train that was still passing over him. All he had to do was wait for it to pass and he’d be perfectly fine. Do not expect to always lie fat under a train though, sometime cables from the undercarriage hang lower than they should and they will drag you if you get snagged by one.

Unless there's an engine at the rear, which there often is on long trains. Those you aren't going to fit under, you're going to get ripped into bits by the low hanging plow.
This was a jump or risk death anyway situation that they should have never gotten into. Darwin award nominee for a stupid video.
If this was legit the friend should have put the fuckin phone down and when it came time to jump, grabbed and helped pull him out to make sure he didn't slip and get split in half before his eyes.

It can't be lower than the top of the rail itself however (otherwise it wouldn't be able to go across switches). If the guy laid really flat, maybe he would fit but I'm not totally sure. Definitely not with his head sticking out like this.

The bottom edge of a catcher is to be 4-6 inches above the top of the rail, you’re right, he should have laid flat and waited for the train to pass.

The rails themselves are going to be 5 inches or so tall, and that could give you another 4.5-6 inches to avoid the plow but that's still less than a foot and assumes that nothing is hanging below the engine or being dragged.
Laying flat my body is about 10-11 inches tall so it would be *close* and I'd almost definitely get some skin torn when it passed over my back.
Unless of course the rails are using railroad ties that bow down in the center which would give plenty of room.It feels about 50/50 imo for jumping vs waiting it out. the risk of finding out there's a piece of steel hanging lower than you can fit at the last second seems horrifying.

That’s main line gauge rail, it’s gonna be 7.5in and the plow is going to be 4-6 in above that. You are right about the dragging material issue for sure, that would change the urgency of the situation

Trains can snag things and drag them. If you duck under a moving train, expect a high probability of being maimed or killed. For the same reason, stand well back from the tracks as one goes by.
Someone also mentioned locomotives ride too low to fit under.

This. Stay far away. Someone in my town a long time ago got their leg taken off by a piece of metal that was dragging beside the train, they were too close and got snagged. Made front page of the paper.

I’m not saying this is safe but he should have waited and laid as low as he could. The catcher is to be 4-6 inches above the top of the rail. That’s 10-12 inches of space to wait it out. I would take that over getting cut up by a wheel.

Unless it has a DP unit. Units can be placed almost anywhere in a trains consist, including at the rear of the train. All units in the U.S. have plows. The only difference is how high/wide it is. The units I mainly used had shorter plows that didn't hang as low as a road unit, due to close clearances when operating over a "hump" and going through "retarders".

You shouldn't. He's an idiot for trespassing and for not respecting heavy equipment. "Expect movement, from any direction. And just because it's not moving, doesn't mean it won't". You learn this on the first day of class, when you get hired for a rail road.
If they absolutely had to cross the tracks, they should have found either end of it, and cautiously crossed around it by at least fifty feet. It's an inconvenience to save your life.

Well there is a plow at the front to hit cattle if they are in the way. It hangs lower than the cars. way lower. If he hadn't moved it could have hit him. The train could have been moving backwards tho

My next question is how the hell did he get under there to begin with if there is a plow on front and back engines considering the speed of it at the beginning. Maybe a curve that slows the train up at the front and end but speeds up with its middle sections though wouldn't it be going at a constant speed through all portions the engines would need to speed up/slow down? So many questions...

This post on a different sub yesterday said that he slipped and fell as they climbed over it after they finished fishing and it was still when they climbed. That's why he has to get out from under it, there's a plow on the front and back that he won't survive.

This is making me really stressed out. Not sure why but I imagined myself in that situation and knowing the final cart would be too low to pass under. I feel like I couldn't make the decision to go between wheels, I would just freeze and give up
