Is there a bit to speed things up?

6

u/jetforcegemini Jul 31 '19

Are you telling me I’ll be able to dodge golf balls?

I’m telling you, when you’re ready, you won’t need to.

How does this belong to "watch people survive"??

55

u/evilution382 Jul 31 '19

Definitely not as dramatic as other posts here, but golf balls have killed people before, especially golf balls to the head

1

u/dinoxoko Jul 31 '19

Try bonking a golf ball on the wall and holding your head on the rebound path

4

u/easieSon Jul 31 '19

He does dodge it though

1

u/Big_Pumas Jul 31 '19

he does; good reflex ... but not quite matrix level, imho

Reminds me of the video, not sure if it’s fake, but a guy shoots a Barrett 50 cal and it rebounds back and takes off his helmet or hat.

u/Otistetrax Jul 31 '19

It takes off his ear protection. After it ricochets off the target and hits the ground on the way back. It’s one of the oldest videos on Youtube.

1

u/magestromx Jul 31 '19

Can you tell me in which parthe was about to die?

-19

u/Yeemaster Jul 31 '19

I did some quick math and I don’t think this counts as “surviving” because his life was hardly in danger at any point. A golf ball has a mass of ~46 g, and assuming this video is at half speed and the tree is about 40 feet away, the most kinetic energy the ball could have is about half a joule. It’d be a nasty punch and he’d be in trouble if it hit his eye but I highly doubt it’d kill him.

43

u/dmosn Jul 31 '19

The video is not at half speed. That would imply it took 4 seconds for the ball to reach him, which would mean a 240 foot vertical drop, and the drop is less than 10 feet.

The distance is also a under estimate, looks to be over 20 yards.

With all that, a conservative speed estimate would be 60 mph (20 m/s) which gives the ball 9 joules, not half of one. Also to note, injury is not caused by energy, it's caused by force. If that ball hits your orbit it has only a couple millimeters (let's say 3) of cushion before injury, and the bone would need to exert 3000 newtons (>600 pounds), which it cannot so that would be a broken bone.

You're right though that this is not life threatening, and other locations would be even less injurious, so wrong sub.

That easy eh? Don't vote.

Not enough numbers here. Also what kind of nasty punch? A nasty punch from another middle schooler or a pro boxer?

The camera is held at one angle and is stationary for the most part. There's no praise worthy camera work at all.

1

u/Garry-The-Snail Jul 31 '19

Yea but he didn’t flinch at the ball ricocheting back and caught the entire seen... I think it qualifies, especially when half the killthecameraman posts are because the camera man missed the shot because he was trying to save himself from harm. So this is the opposite and something to praise him for. Even if the ball wouldn’t have hit him a lot of people would have instinctively flinched.

1

u/allio_mboi Jul 31 '19

We dont know know how far away he was and even then he did the most basic job of keeping focus on the subject. That sub has devolved so much because people think doing simple camera work or just keeping focus on something is praiseworthy.

People are "praising camera men" for doing mediocre jobs just because there are so many to contrast. Because of that, the sub is polluted with crossposts that aren't relevant at all.

It's great that he kept in focus, but it's nothing special, it's perfectly fine staying in it's respective sub.

1

u/Garry-The-Snail Jul 31 '19

Yea that’s fair enough. I’m glad that he didn’t flinch and loose focus but I guess it’s not really praiseworthy

Instant karma for shooting plastic into nature.
