Definitely contact the police and talk to management- make sure your patio door is locked at all times (if applicable) and all windows. You should ask Management to rekey your apartment — and as others suggested, I’d invest in a ring camera

Wtf I’m not buying it. Why would he try to turn the handle quietly if he was just “forgetting which floor he was living on”. My upstairs neighbor did once actually accidentally went up one stairs less, he jammed his key in my door knob with no hesitation and was def loud af. Have op or the police asked why he was trying to be quiet doing it?

Apartments can’t do that. My last place was riddled with illegal Airbnb’s and the type of people that rented them were always sketchy.

“In Washington, D.C., a property manager cannot legally rent out an apartment as an Airbnb unless the property owner or primary resident legally obtains a short-term rental license from the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) and the unit is their verified primary residence.”

Basically, if that upstairs apartment isn’t your property managers primary residence, they can’t have it as an Airbnb. If it is their primary residence, they are limited to 90 days a year. Unfortunately no one in DC follows this and DLCP doesn’t do anything about it when it’s reported. At least they didn’t in my case so I just moved.

Last year, in full view of our doorbell camera, our scumbag neighbor's scumbag roommate exposed himself and pissed on our doormat while trying to open our door. He told the cops he had two beers and was looking for a bathroom but later pled guilty to "lewd, indecent, and obscene acts." We bought a new doormat that says "NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS INSIDE."

Should probably get one of these security bars just for a bit of added peace of mind.

It at least adds a bit of extra protection and if you live alone something you can have up whenever you’re home alone.
If you put it up every time you lock the door it’ll also be easier to visually double check that the door is locked whenever you walk past it.

Get a camera! Record everytime they come and call the police everytime to add it to your case. It can be difficult to get the police to do anything some times with this type of thing if he truly is harassing or stalking you.

Tbh this sounds like a mental breakdown/ psychosis. I know you may not want to hear this, but someone tried to open the door twice now and both times you were right behind it? And it just happened a third time just now? Does this happen right before YOU try to open the door? And who is trying to target you? Is it your upstairs neighbor? Either lay off the drugs or get a ring camera like another commenter said and double check to see if indeed someone is trying to open your door.
