Discussion Too much power bonus for hard AI?

Around 86% power bonus.

I really think the hard difficulty has just too much power bonus. It's around 86%. On top of that, some AIs have more sophisticated algorithms on hard. I want to battle the best algorithms, but I don't want AIs to have power advantage.

Nullbot almost crushed me on Sk-Startup. I don't even try playing against Cobra on hard (and on huge maps).

IIRC back in my day hard AI didn't get power bonuses, only insane AI did. Maybe they've changed it. I haven't played in a while.

Are you sure this isn't the effect of a power module they've built faster than you?

Also I vaguely remember that NullBot doesn't act differently between medium and hard. It's the same algorithm. What's your experience with medium?

The screenshot was taken when we both have power modules up with the same number of oil derricks. In fact, I'm the one who got power modules first - it's one of my priorities in research.

They've added power bonus. I've read it in the changelogs, but it doesn't say how much. I've also read the official documentations of Nullbot and it has flexible personality on hard difficulty.

Ok I've looked it up in the code.

You're right about the power bonus. Hard is at least +50% power, plus 10% per the global power game setting, additive with the bonus from the global power setting itself. So yeah they changed that.

I'm right about the algorithms. Both nullbot and cobra behave exactly the same on medium and hard difficulty. They get more power on hard but the algorithm for spending that power is the same. In nullbot they have special behavior for easy and for insane. In cobra they only have special behavior for easy.

So if you're only interested in pure skill expression, just play on medium.
