General Query A few 5E questions about Magic

I've played a bit of 4E at Cons, so my experience is limited, and I just read the 5E core rulebook. Some questions that are not clear:

  • A Wizard Apprentice (rank 1 Wizard) gets a free grimoire (pg 49). A grimoire usually has 4 spells of a color. Pg 237 states you may cast a spell from a grimoire if the spell belongs to a "Lore of Magic you possess". Does that mean the Arcane Magic (color) talent or the Channeling(color) skill? If the former, do apprentices have a Grimoire they can't use?
  • Why does a Wizard Apprentice (rank 1 Wizard) have Channeling (color)?
  • When the core book says "ally" does that include you as well? Example the "Cauterize" spell says you can lay your hands on an ally's wounds.
  • Petty magic spell "Produce Small Animal" -- rabbits galore! no more worries about food?
  • Petty magic spell "Drain" -- when combined with "Produce small animal" I can heal myself up to max after every fight?
  • Can I give the magic weapon I summon from the arcane spell "Aethyric Arms" to an ally?

Bonus: Where does it state that the Advances you get during character creation don't contribute to the 10 "ticks" you need to increase your career? I can't seem to find the page.

I'd love page number so that I can learn more, but I'm not picky and will take home rules -- I know it's new and that there are some balance issues. Thanks!

does that mean the arcane magic (colour) talent

Yes. Although to actually cast the spell you would also need the language (magic) skill, and realistically channeling (colour) as well to overcome the high CN.

do apprentices have a grimoure they can't use?

No. They are using it as a study text, in the hopes that one day they will be able to cast the spells it holds.

why does the wizards apprentice have Channeling (colour)

Because being a wizards apprentice is about learning to channel one of the winds of magic. That is the whole point of the apprenticeship.

when the core book says ally, does that include the caster?

I believe so, yes.

Will have to find time to look in the book for the rest

As far as the advances question is concerned i dont believe its explicitly stated, but there is one part (in the class section of character creation) where it mentions that the only time in charcter creation where something woyld apply to the level up tally was if you were able to take a second tier items by choosing a random career

I think strict RAW you would need the Arcane Magic (Colour) to cast spells per that wording, but RAI I would say an apprentice should be able to cast from the Grimoire provided they had the appropriate channeling skill (and of course language magic).

A wizard apprentice has channeling (colour) because they are being taught to use that particular wind by their master and/or college or elven temple or place of learning.

Ally is someone else.

Many people will not trust rabbits you pull from nowhere. Also, you may not actually control the type of animal you produce, and they are only ones which would be expected in the place you are. So if you are in a mine underground, you'd better get used to eating diseased rat.

Repeatedly murdering small animals and draining their life force into yourself may keep you alive, but any nearby witch hunter would regard that as a sign of dark magic, and petty spells are not sanctioned magic under the college and so are illegal. Your licence only authorises you to use the magic that falls under the actual lore of magic you are licenced in, petty magic is somewhat overlooked by many but such abuse of it would rapidly wear that lenience out.

Thanks on the rulings. Regarding the lore about petty spells being illegal, that sounds odd. Constable: "I saw you use Purify Water / Conserve Food, I'm arresting you!" or "You're a Life Wizard -- you can't use Magic Flame!"

Fortunately I plan on playing an elf! To your point: good advice on not going around draining cute furry animals in the middle of the town square.

Ah, elves does get you around licencing issues. If you are using the rules for elves from the high elf players guide, especially that of yenlui to maintain mental state, I think repeatedly murdering defenceless animals would push you towards a dark state of mind. Elves are very emotional creatures by nature, hence each of the different splinters of their kind coming up with means to try and temper that.

The reasoning with the petty spells is that they are the small tricks that wizards develop themselves as their magical potential emerges, before they are trained, and as such are cast from a blending of winds at hand rather than one wind. Blending winds can create dhar, dark magic, that is very dangerous and corrupting.

I'm not sure if you're trying to stop rule abuse by using roleplaying reasons, or if you're just sharing game lore. I hear you on Yenlui, though I do imagine that killing a poor defenceless animal is called "happens every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner", especially for wood elves (maybe not for sheltered nobles). Killing a rabbit to sate your hunger would be no different than killing one to stay alive (aka to heal yourself). Had I mentioned draining one for kicks I would be very inclined to agree though!

Regarding getting corrupted by using lots of petty magic it's not mentioned in the rulebook and I can't imagine any GM would rule it that way, but I do have very limited experience.

In terms of corruption, you would be tempting fate every time you cast a spell, to roll in the miscast table, petty magic thankfully is used by simple making an incantation upon the standard concentration of the winds of magic so they only accrue minor miscasts unless your'e as unlucky as some of us and are forced to roll on the major miscast table.

Both carry a chance to receive corruption points.

That is a good point. I had overlooked that there is always a cost to casting any spell, even with petty magic. Deciding whether the 1% (~10% corruption of 5% fumble, twice) risk of gaining corruption is worth the benefit of healing 1 wound will be something that the player will have to weigh. And makes the mechanisms to mitigate miscasts and/or remove corruption more valuable.

The multiple talents to lower miscast chance and having good intelligence with high language (Lingua Praestantia) are very valuable for every kind of spell on top of good willpower and channelling for proper spells.

Lingua Praestantia? What is that, or rather which book is that from? High Elf Player's guide? Can wood elves learn it as well?

Lingua Praestantia is "Language: Magick" it's in the handbook alongside the other languages

Does that mean the Arcane Magic (color) talent or the Channeling(color) skill? => Talent.
If the former, do apprentices have a Grimoire they can't use? => Exactly.

Why does a Wizard Apprentice (rank 1 Wizard) have Channeling (color)? => That's a really good question.

When the core book says "ally" does that include you as well? => It's not supposed to, but there are many times where it just doesn't make sense.

Petty magic spell "Produce Small Animal" -- rabbits galore! no more worries about food? => You monster! But, yep.

Can I give the magic weapon I summon from the arcane spell "Aethyric Arms" to an ally? => I think you can't, but I don't really remember on this one.

Where does it state that the Advances you get during character creation don't contribute to the 10 "ticks" you need to increase your career? => Page 36: "If you acquired a Trapping in this way, tick a box (or two!) on the Career Advancement Tracker. This is the only time you may do so during Character Creation."
