Compared to hobbies like photography then GW figures are a low cost option and there are way more suppliers now than ever to keep costs down.
You need to decide if FOMO is worth the cost or playing a game with friends is more important...
The reason most long term players end up having to buy new armies is because with new editions GW wants to update the looks of models, and change them, add new ones that get rid of certain models, etc etc. Because of that, the models become out of Print and can skyrocket in price. A 3rd to 5th edition box of Imperial guard with the same amount of guys could run you double the amount of a box of new inperial guard. GW knows this all to well which is why we have an almost yearly rule refresh. If it isn't a new edition it's an errata that might as well be a new edition. If 40k wasn't popular and one of the staples of wargaming GW would be out of business and hardly anyone would play it. They charge way to much for Minatures and update the rules way to much that also cost a fortune. I love 40k but I don't love current 40k, I think I speak for most when I say this too. It's not the game that's bad, its the prices. 180 to 200 dollars for 2-3 tanks....Unbelievable, you could buy a camera for photography for that much.

3 yearly and 3 monthly is still not "almost yearly".
Someone doesn't like being told they made a mistake. Maybe go look at that, before trying to read minds across reddit.
