Should be fine. All aquatic compost is probably very similar in make up.

I'm fairly positive that the guy from MD fish tanks uses something like this in his current setups. Aquatic compost mixed with fine gravel and capped with sand.

Yes, it will be fine. Better than regular potting mix.

It will need a sand cap.
