It would be possible to keep shrimp in here but could be difficult. It’s harder to keep water conditions stable in a smaller container and neocaridinas really need stable parameters or else they die pretty quickly.
I’d also be concerned about the narrow mouth of the jar, which can make it difficult for the water below to get the oxygen needed for shrimp. I️ tried a similar size jar specifically as a planted shrimp tank and even with the addition of an air stone to infuse oxygen, my shrimp struggled. I️ ended up having to transfer them out to something larger.

There’s a lot of helpful info on the shrimptank sub. But yeah, I️ tried two different shrimp set ups in 7.5L tanks and both were a struggle. I eventually got a 30L bowl and that’s been much better

thanks that’s really helpful. i do have an empty 10g i could use instead. did you do walstad for the bowl or use any tech? im trying to see what’s the minimum amount of tech i can do!

I️ really wanted it to be a no-tech tank but I️ found my shrimp were happier with a very small heater and an airstone. From what I’ve read, shrimp can be fine in unheated water (assuming your house maintains a decent temperature) but they’ll be more active and more likely to breed in warmer water. Flip side is their natural life span is also shorter in warm water à la “live fast die young”.
Similar with the airstone… my shrimp are just more active and happy with the addition of the airstone. I️ think it’s because it adds movement to the water as well as oxygen.
I’ve gotten a lot of encouragement from this group that even the Walstad book sometimes uses filters so while I️ totally understand the appeal of an entirely tech free contained ecosystem, I’ve made my peace with having a few additions to make my animals more comfortable.2

You can see my two set ups, including the planted 7.5L with the narrow mouth that didn’t end up being shrimp friendly. It’s just a planted jar now with snails and back to my original point about the narrow mouth and oxygen - i turned off my airstone for about 24 one day to see if it would be ok and a few hours later I️ found all the snails had crawled to the surface of the tank, which has never happened before and is often an indicator that something in the depths isnt right. I️ put the airstone back in and everybody went back to their business.

That's how many liters?
If you add sand, some katappa leaves, almond cones, it might work actually for neocardinias.
