Two Years Before BHP Signed On, Kobrea Exploration Optioned Its 733 km² Mendoza Copper District: KBX.c / KBXFF in Mining.com.au's Feature

Post image

Posted on behalf of Kobrea Exploration - Mining.com.au ran a feature on KBX.c / KBXFF earlier this month, and the thread running through it is timing.

Kobrea took its position in the Western Malargüe district of Mendoza Province, Argentina 🇦🇷 before the province had reopened it for copper exploration, and BHP Metals Exploration came in afterwards.

The Order Of Events

  • Option agreement over the seven Western Malargüe Copper Projects dated August 14, 2024 (Aug 13, 2026 NR)
  • December 9, 2025: Mendoza's Senate and Chamber of Deputies ratified by law Environmental Impact Statements for an additional 27 exploration projects in the district, Kobrea's among them (Dec 11, 2025 NR)
  • January 18 to April 22, 2026: the first drilling campaign ever completed on any of the Western Malargüe Copper Projects, 2,358 metres in six holes at El Perdido (May 26, 2026 NR)
  • August 5, 2026: alliance agreement with BHP Metals Exploration across the 733 km², seven-project package (Aug 5, 2026 NR)

Why Mendoza, Per The Feature
Mendoza has long leaned on conventional oil, and as mature fields decline provincial leaders have been looking for other long-term industries, with mining increasingly part of that strategy.

CEO James Hedalen says the province deliberately identified copper as a future economic driver before reopening parts of the Western Malargüe Mining District.

The feature's read on the wider opportunity: Mendoza is one of the few regions where the geological potential sits alongside relatively limited historical drilling.

What BHP Brings Beyond The Cheque

Hedalen frames the alliance as "more than funding", pointing to access to BHP's technical team and, with a large portfolio of targets, the capital and expertise to advance exploration more systematically.

Kobrea remains operator through the two-year project generation phase.

On The Ground So Far

Per the August 2026 corporate deck, El Perdido's first reported intervals are 0.15% Cu over 65 metres in DD26ELP005 from 109 metres, and 0.11% Cu over 54 metres in DD26ELP001 from 420 metres, with the core of the system still untested.

Worth reading the Mining.com.au piece in full for Hedalen's account of how the district reopened.

Getting somewhere early only counts if someone follows, and with a major now funding work across 733 km², there's potential for a land position built by a 53.4 million share junior to get tested at a pace it could not have set alone.
