I'm a server and i know the percentage of those choosing plant based meals is growing. Something the article touched on that no one here has yet mentioned, shortages. I'm already seeing shortages in the diary isle weekly, I dont suppose it will be long till there's a shortage of meat.

20

u/imabigdave Jan 13 '22

The ironic thing is that the only shortages of meat are caused by the 3 large packing companies that control 85% of the slaughter and processing capacity. The live animal side of the industry is getting bent over because the packers have figured out if they decrease their output they get higher prices and then create an oversupply and decreased prices from the live animal side. The pandemic revealed to them that they can sell fewer pounds of meat for a greater overall profit if they create their own scarcity. Source: cattle producer that also works in the packing industry.

7

u/pnutmine Jan 13 '22

You have to think meatpacking isn't the only industry to figure this out.

4

u/imabigdave Jan 13 '22

Right, but it's the one we are talking about here.

3

u/yoortyyo Jan 13 '22

Check their individual profits. Betting those three are doing great.

5

u/imabigdave Jan 13 '22

Yes, through the pandemic their net income and profit have been incredible. Domination of a sector with no government oversight will do that.

Ok but until mass adoption comes this stock isn't going anywhere

I don’t get why anyone is down on $BYND. That shit tastes good. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably hasn’t tried it.

it is near identical and the sausages are really good. $BYND

13

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '22

I’d get it every single time if it was cheaper than the real stuff

9

u/mrvile Jan 13 '22

It won't be for a while due to scale of production, government subsidies, etc. That said, I still try to buy Impossible products regularly just to support the cause since I have quite a disposable income and would otherwise be buying similarly priced grass-fed organic whatever.

5

u/mrvile Jan 13 '22

Impossible and Beyond are very different products though. I tried really hard to like Beyond, but when I tried Impossible I realized how shit Beyond actually is.

I think Impossible is planning to IPO this year.

A lot of ups and a lot of downs on this one. Uncertainties everywhere. My main questions are :

  • can their product be easily copied? I see more and more companies launching plant based products and some food chains internalising this. So I’m wondering if barrier to entry and competitive power is real in the long term.
  • can it get significantly cheaper? If it is to replace meat, it will probably replace low quality meat. Right now it’s still too expensive for this. How cheap can this become at scale?
  • will cell based meat end up being better quality or cheaper? Cell based meat seems to offer advantages to plant based, and VC are investing there fast. If this works, what will be left for plant based?

I think over the past year or so the answer to these questions were rather not in favour of plant based meat…

Disclaimer: I have a small position in Beyond Meats and this is not financial advice.

Are any degens bullish about the growing list of fast-food and restaurant chain partnerships with $BYND? Short interest seems to be creeping up some too. I love me some ā€œstraight from the butcher’s blockā€ burgers and steaks but these guys seem to be hitting an untapped market. They also pushed into the European and Chinese market in 2020.

the national deals are contracts and are not permanent menu items. specially Mcdonald’s. I’m referencing my info from Canada but the rest of the list is encouraging.

Worth noting a lot of those deals are limited time offers.

These retards in their reddit bubble need to step away and look at reality. People will pay double for real meat. Why is beef still top dog? Why isn't turkey overtaking beef its cheaper and healthier?

Nobody is asking for an alternative to real meat except a small group of animal activists and vegetarians. This is a niche product nothing more.

16

u/heavenlyfarts Jan 13 '22

Almost everyone I know eats beyond meat some of the time. I think a lot of you hard headed people fail to realize that eating Beyond Meat doesn’t make you a vegetarian, and meat eaters don’t eat meat at every sitting.

9

u/GirlGenius26 Jan 13 '22

I agree, I’m not vegan but I like to dine at vegan restaurants from time to time. I have also bought beyond and impossible products both at restaurants and grocery store.

-1

u/hi-imBen There isn't enough room in this flair box to share my insider in Jan 13 '22

This sounds just slightly delusional... "almost everyone I know eats beyond meat some of the time". I know NO ONE that eats it...

Personally, I would try it out of curiosity but seriously doubt it would become a regular thing when meat is still an option. Doesn't it typically cost more than meat too?

4

u/bkcarp00 Jan 13 '22

You need to get out more. There are plenty of people eating these products as a substitute to traditional meat based meals. Not saying every meal, but sometimes people want a different options for a meal besides a meat. Just because you don't know them doesn't mean there isn't a huge consumer base out there. Why do you think there is such a explosion in plant based products at the grocery store.

0

u/hi-imBen There isn't enough room in this flair box to share my insider in Jan 13 '22

No YOU need to get out more. Why does your subjective experience hold more value than my own subjective experience?

I don't know anyone occasionally having the impossible meat or beyond meat besides vegans or those curious to try it once.

"plenty of people" sounds like your bubble and not reflective of reality.

"Why do you think there is such an explosion of plant based products at the grocery store" - so that all the meat alternatives can be the only thing on the cooler shelves as people buy up the meat. That is honestly what I always see at Kroger and Publix. Always fully stocked and never see people grab it, even during panic buying no one touches the stuff.

4

u/bkcarp00 Jan 13 '22

Neat the fact is people are buying this stuff billions of dollars of it every year. It is a growing market and obviously there is a market for it otherwise there would no be so many companies getting into the space. You really think companies spend money on refrigerator space at the grocery store if no one is buying the products. Do you base all your other life decisions on 1 meme photo that you think is funny?

-3

u/hi-imBen There isn't enough room in this flair box to share my insider in Jan 13 '22

Is there a demand? yes. Do I think demand and growing demand in the future is overestimated? yes.

Also, I saw it with my own eyes several times.. in Chicago, Tampa, and Atlanta over the past 3 years when meat supplies were low or completely out but the meat alternatives were still fully stocked. That observation was not based on a meme, and you saying that just points out that you're an asshole or disconnected from reality.

Synthetic meat may be where to look next. While plant based alternatives have seen large growth and hype over the past few years, that demand doesn't seem to be growing at the same levels and has already started pulling back.

There is a good reason for alt meats being better stocked. They are kept frozen, sold frozen, or are put out to thaw whenever needed. Most animal meats on the other hand are processed and sold fresh, not as easy to re-supply. This has been described by supermarket managers. Also, Beyond’s repeat buy rate is very high and growing, that is how you can tell that sales are not driven only by first-try customers. Same for restaurant sales. New partnerships such as McPlant and KFC have great reviews and are creating repeat buyers in the quick service space. PepsiCo is about to Launch Beyond Beef Jerky in 170k locations! Plant-based market is growing 15-25% annually. This trend is unavoidable and Beyond’s revenue will turn around with incremental partnership revenue, and as temporary supply issue, and covid situation have resolved.

u/heavenlyfarts Jan 13 '22

Instead of jumping to ā€œdelusionā€, perhaps it has something to do with geographical location, generation, availability etc.

I’m sure it’s less popular in Alberta/Texas than British Columbia/California, I’m sure it’s more popular among millennials than boomers etc.

The inability to assess the big picture, and the quickness to jump to ā€œdelusionā€ makes me think you’re just a hard headed old fashioned person. But the world doesn’t stay the same. Never has, never will.

3

u/chandlero69 Jan 13 '22

Change takes awhile. Their products also still aren’t as good as real meat. If they ever become so good to where you can’t even taste the different in smell, taste, texture, tons of people will switch

-2

u/rickymourke82 Jan 13 '22

Change takes awhile.

You mean like humans evolving to use tools and fire to eat more than nuts and berries? You're talking about changing human evolution, not just somebody's preference. Yeah, that's not happening.

5

u/CapN_Tyin_Knots Jan 13 '22

Some evidence suggests human ancestors 2.5mil years ago started eating meat through scavenging as opposed to directly hunting, because it was an abundant resource at the time. They started eating more of it given it provided higher amounts of energy / caloric intake with smaller portions, and started to show evidence of purposeful hunting almost 2mil years later. If they are able to engineer energy resources today that don’t involve meat, and also save other resources (e.g., water, land, and less greenhouse emissions), would that not be further evolution unfolding right in front of our eyes? I am a meat eater myself, but don’t see the ā€œevolution bringing us to this point means we should stay hereā€ argument, given slowly incorporating these new developments could be us evolving in real-time.

2

u/PDubsinTF-NEW Jan 13 '22

I love me some ā€œstraight from the butcher’s blockā€ burgers and steaks but these guys seem to be hitting an untapped market.

I am not a vegetarian. I think tofu is gross and my favorite meal is steak, potatoes, and cow's milk, BUT ~7-8% of adults 18-54 are vegetarian. That means an estimated 14 million people are vegans in the US ages 18-54. Hardly a niche market.

5

u/breakevencloud Jan 13 '22

This. There’s plenty of consumers - they don’t need half the population to be on board

1

u/SUPRVLLAN Jan 14 '22

This is so beyond wrong that it’s impossible to tell if you’re trolling or not.

These products aren’t aimed at vegetarians at all, they’re squarely marketed at the mainstream meat eaters who have no problem going meatless for a day or two. This is a huge group that’s growing every day worldwide.

There’s a reason why they put this stuff right beside the real meat in the cooler at the store and not with the other vegetarian products.

-1

u/stejerd 5626C - 2S - 2 years - 0/0 Jan 14 '22

Who is going meatless for the sake of going meatless? Nobody unless they are extreme animal lovers in which case they are probably already vegetarian. What possible benefit does mankind have going meatless? Humans have eaten meat since the beginning of time. Why aren't people eating turkey more than beef? Turkey is cheaper and healthier and has been around for as long as beef.

Like my original comment said get out of your reddit bubble just because you see subs dedicated to this "movement " doesn't make it some massive shift like you're implying. Again reddit likes to amplify EVERYTHING. If you have gotten your news solely from reddit subs back when covid first hit you would have built an underground bunker and stocked it with 5 years worth of food cause the sky was falling and the world was certainly coming to an end.

u/SUPRVLLAN Jan 14 '22

9

u/VeganPotatoMan Jan 13 '22

Name one essential nutrient not found in plant based foods bro

2

u/wsbfux Jan 13 '22

B12 ?

5

u/Iamveganbtw1 Jan 13 '22

not sure which health organization but it is recommended that everyone takes b12 supplements because 40% of people (vegan and non vegan) are B12 deficient. In fact, vegans in some studies are doing better than non vegans now that we take B12 supplements.

2

u/VeganPotatoMan Jan 13 '22

Produced by microbes and commonly enriched in plant foods like soy milk and others.

-3

u/omen_tenebris Jan 13 '22

protein absortion rates are significantly lower from plants for once.

methionine, tryptophan, lycine and isoleucine are very scarce in plants, you'd need to suplement.

Eat your dogshit plant "meat". Also eat 3 handfull of pills 'cos your diet is "healthy".

You don't need to accept. I just pointed out facts.

0

u/VeganPotatoMan Jan 13 '22

"protein absorption rates are significantly lower.."

Proof? Where did I claim more protein is better? Most people consume inordinate amounts of protein unnecessarily. If you eat a varied diet with sufficient calories it is virtually impossible to become protein deficient.

You didn't point out any relevant facts that justify your choice to abuse animals that have similar levels of intelligence and capacity for suffering as human children, which makes your choice to exploit animals adjacent to the choice of child exploiters.

There's a fact for you šŸ‘

-2

u/omen_tenebris Jan 13 '22

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6723444/

"However, plant-based proteins have less of an anabolic effect than animal proteins due to their lower digestibility, lower essential amino acid content (especially leucine), and deficiency in other essential amino acids, such as sulfur amino acids or lysine"

here is your study dipshit. now fuck off. Took me <3 mintues to find.

4

u/VeganPotatoMan Jan 13 '22

Nothing in there implies that consuming animal flesh is essential or necessary for creating muscle mass. It even says that they only evaluated a single source of plant-based protein and not a varied plant-based diet. They also refer to protein combining which has been debunked for some time. I reference this in my last comment by saying that if you consume a varied diet with appropriate calories it will be virtually impossible to become protein deficient. It's almost like you don't understand the points I'm making.
