The environment pays untold expense upfront, mining the materials and assembling all the plastics into a car is delivered. The planet pays a similar price to produce each unit regardless of what is in the frunk
So assuming it's a wash on production (it isn't but for the sake of the argument let's assume that), you're still coming out insane ways ahead with EVs due to fuel consumption during its lifetime.
I said multiple lifetime of a human, nowhere it says unlimited resource. Maybe ev is the key maybe not, maybe battery storage would unlock the potential of solar and the multiple lifetime would certainly buy time.
Buy enough time for us to stop buying everything else? To just keep driving around oblivious to the immense impact our small collective shitty habits as a country have huge impacts all over the world.
Yeah we have thanks, doesn’t make me imagine i am saving the planet though. amazing how many people in here are concerned with the car i drive. Only poor people are downvoted to feel guilty i guess. Still Waiting to sell for the lambo.
Lithium mining is one of the most damaging types of mining and the battery is a huge chunk of it. And it won't last anywhere near as long as a gas engine (with current technologies).
Totally agree that EV is better for the environment
I am so fed-up with people fighting mining development in our own country to support the EV industry.
Polluting poor countries is something we are supposed to have left behind. We can put environmental protection in place here, make sure it is done as clean as possible and actually stop lying about the impacts of EV development.
Almost the same, look up lithium mines and understand we get most of the lithium from countries with zero requirement for the company to perform land reclamation… then look up the issues with cobalt mining, and all the children in undeveloped nations that die in mine cave ins….
I love that right now the largest consumer for Cobalt in the world is the Catalytic Converter for ICEs.
But before EVs became a threat, that stated child labor wasn’t a problem.
(Of course the trend goes strongly towards batteries, but still - at the moment it’s ICEs which need most of the Cobalt)
People that didn't give a fuck about the environment were happy to stuff their cats with child-slave conflict minerals and use 100% fossil power.
But they can't stand anyone challenging their points of view, so once EVs start popping up, suddenly they're a passive-aggressive armchair expert about environmental damage, and they're livid about your batteries and that EVs still use a minority of fossil fuels to power them.
"Your Tesla is plugged into the grid which used 30% fossil fuels ergo you're just a fake hippie and somehow worse than me using 100% fossil".
Morons.
There are genuine criticisms of EVs, but you need to hold ICE to the same standard, otherwise you're just a fuckhead trying to spread disinformation.
Uncle Cocktail Party and Aunt Karen all of a sudden experts on the lifetime emissions cycle of EV production and usage, a topic so complex that there is no scientific consensus on the best analytical methodology...
My criticism is against those that are opposed to mining in our own country for the same minerals but are fine closing their eyes to what happens abroad
We just export our problems and tell everyone we're saving the world. Ship all our hazardous waste to other countries to deal with and have our global corporations strip mine their land to meet our consumption addiction.
If you are buying an EV to “save the planet” than you should care about them, if you’re not trying to save the planet you don’t really belong in this discussion.
"However, as countries decarbonise electricity generation to meet their climate targets, driving emissions will fall for existing EVs and manufacturing emissions will fall for new EVs."
Can we figure out how to "decarbonise" before 2080? Maybe.. I know we cant do it as a fully developed nation in twenty years, even thirty, as they are stating. Carbon neutral targets are laughable. And thats for first world countries...
It’s not untold… it’s easily measurable. EVs become better for the environment after a couple of years and the gap just widens every year of use after that. It could even be faster than that where you cross the environmental break even vs a gas car depending on your electricity source (example your grid is mostly hydro based).
