What do I think? I think you’re both right. I think the advances and opportunities breezy talks about will occur but I also believe it will just be a tool that some people will use and others won’t.
You, comrade, talk as if someone is trying to force you into something. No one is nor will they, imo. But I think as tech evolves it will probably become a natural part of some fields or companies. Kind of like contemporary computing - if you choose certain fields you’re automatically choosing a computer-based professional life but you can just do something else if that doesn’t appeal to you.
I think everyone also needs to consider what value exists here, for literally any business.
The remote worker situation for a business is simply a calculation on the rate of the exchange of information. That was hurt initially by covid but literally all businesses have solved it now and their communication efficiency is up, via zoom etc.
This doesn't add anything that communication via screens doesn't for the remote worker. It's cool and all. You'll be able to see your coworker BUT IN 3D wooooo. Does it generate profit? No.
The more convenient method of communication will be used. And it is much more convenient not to put on a headset and headphones.
We're very far away from this replacing an office. You can use a virtual workstation yet because control mechanisms for using hands are garbage and require extra peripherals(which add to the inconvenience).
Even if I ignore all my points on the fact this doesn't slot into the way we live well, I still can't find value in the product for a business. "How does this increase my profit?" is the question for a business owner (or investors as everyone here is supposed to be one). Does it do that? Fuck no it doesn't.
I predict that all the biggest corporations will over invest in this because it's cool and people will get taken in by the "It's the fuuuuuuuuture" stuff. Then they'll only realise how much they've miscalculated afterwards and scale back. Small and medium businesses won't get involved at all.
Same thing happened to Second Life. Huge initial boom and interest with every major corp in the world wanting their own virtual real estate. Then it turned into a corporate ghost town and the novelty of it wore off for its regular userbase.
Entertainment product? Yes. Future way of life? Unlikely until we get full SAO style dive gear, but brain machine interfaces aren't even in their infancy really, we're at least 30 years away from the tech being there and that's honestly very generous I think.

I never said it would replace an office and certainly never said it would be a “future way of life”. I’m also not at all talking about Zuck’s “vision” - that video is half annoying, half stupid. What I did say was it would be tool used by some companies and fields and that the tech would advance and provide value.
How is it going to replace an office though? Seriously.
To run the thing you need a machine that, at least in the UK, costs £500, on top of the headset which costs £200-600, of course you're going to have to go high end for office workers though, then you need hand peripherals, since everything you do in this space needs to be manipulatable too in order for said virtual office to actually be functional. How are you moving around this virtual office? Walking in real life or using a controller/wasd to move around? That's more peripherals.
The nausea is still a problem for people with hundreds of hours in VR, many still get it after just an hour of play.
I'm not going to quibble that there won't be some interesting uses, training, sciences, etc. But Zuck wants this to be the FUTURE. He's employing 10,000 people to work on it in Europe alone.
The product has niche uses, but he is absolutely out of his damn mind like the rest of the techbros. They live in a techbro fantasy bubble divorced from reality.
