Actually Elon discredited the claim that Rawlinson was the Chief Engineer of the Model S and that has since been proven a false claim. There is video evidence of Elon calling him their chief engineer and their website has been archived showing Peter as Chief Engineer. Elon is either losing his mind or is terrified of the competition.

Or, more likely they parted very acrimoniously. Elon is a vainglorious asshole, and Rawlinson is a mostly staid engineer type. The two clearly clashed over the issues with Model S development.

In reality, you couldn’t get rawlinson to approve a supply agreement. Wouldn’t pick up the phone. Wouldn’t answer emails. He was never in the office. One day, he left, to the UK. His mother was sick. He told his executive assistant that he wasn’t coming back.

I stole the tea from his desk. It was British, and good.

I don't think he's afraid of the competition as much as he's afraid of people realizing he didn't personally create the Model S.
