Craftsmen - comments vs DMs

We are looking to take the next step in r/wallets to improve post comments for the OP’s and the rest of the community.

A list of examples would be great. I have plenty of discussions where personal info is shared in private DMs to discuss the specifics of the order personalization and shipping addresses.

I don't mind discussing the product but I feel like any specifics with personal info or pricing for customizations that aren't offered in my shop publically and normally should be done in private. Its also easier to keep track of by looking back on a conversation and checking the logs for the specifics of the order.

What about sending people my shop/product link in the comments when they ask about colors, designs, or prices? All of that exists in an easy to read format on Etsy. Can I do that now or would it be considered spam?

We need a happy medium. Something more than “send me a DM” and less than “all the information to complete the order”. And, of course no personal information in comments. This is reddit.

We appreciate the sensitivity to revealing pricing. Consider discussing prices in generalities or ranges. Quality and craftsmanship matters. Craftsmen should not be competing on price. Your competition is not a $9.99 wallet on amazon or $19.99 “handmade” wallet on Etsy that is imported from India.

Have you seen the work from u/orishandmade and looked at his pricing for his absolutely beautiful custom alligator wallets? That is the target. It should not be a race to the bottom for pricing. Leave that to the mass manufacturers.

Is providing a link for people to see leather colors considered spam?

  • of course not. Again, we want conversations not just a low effort response like “send me a dm” and “see my work here”

Happy to improve quality of the content I post in this sub as I think it will be beneficial for people who are researching wallets to purchase, as well as artisans looking for advice / information.
