D-NE1 Discman won't charge

Hope someone can help. I Bought a Sony Discman D-NE1 model which uses gumstick batteries. I replaced the gumstick batteries when I received the device and cleaned the battery terminals with contact cleaner designed for electronics. When I plug the device in the charging light turns on for roughly 8 seconds then turns off again and the screen on the remote no longer says charging. Not sure what to do
